Sherwood Secondary School

Sherwood Secondary School is located at 25 High Street Hamilton Ontario, and is a member of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. Opened in 1967, Sherwood Secondary School has a 2013-2014 enrolment of 1050. Sherwood uses the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) to assess Grade 10 students' skills in reading and writing. Successful completion of the test is one of 32 requirements students need to attain in order to receive an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The school also offers special education classes.

History

Sherwood Secondary School was founded in 1967 as part of the Board of Education for the City of Hamilton's plan to accommodate children of baby boomer's. The school is named after the Sherwood Forest Survey area of the Hamilton Mountain.

Curriculum focus

Sherwood Secondary School has a variety of educational programs and has developed educational programs specific to the needs of our students. Sherwood offers locally developed courses through College and University preparation programs. Sherwood also offers Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs for students to learn in real world co-operative learning environments.

The Sherwood School Community is involved in researching and changing literacy practices and have increased their literacy scores over the past four years from 2005 to 2009.
