Shaun Grigg (born 19 April 1988) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by Carlton in the 2006 AFL Draft and played 43 games for them over four seasons before being traded to Richmond during the 2010 Trade Week.

Early life

Grigg grew up in Ballarat and was a good junior tennis player, with his name on the honour board at Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre.

Football career

Prior to AFL selection, Grigg, an undersized ruckman, played with North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup. After being passed over in the 2005 AFL Draft, he was selected in the 2006 AFL National Draft in the second round by Carlton (19th pick overall).

Grigg's development with Carlton's VFL-affiliate, the Northern Bullants, was delayed significantly by a shoulder injury sustained early in the 2007 season. He made his AFL debut against Melbourne in Round 14. Grigg earned a regular position in the Carlton team throughout 2008, and was nominated for the NAB Rising Star award in Round 19.[1]

He is the son of Peter Grigg, who was a champion player for the Western Plains Football League team Carngham-Linton,and represented Australia in Rugby Union, playing 25 tests for the Wallabies during the 1980s. [2]

During the 2010 trade period, he was heavily linked to a move to the Richmond Football Club, due to both financial reasons and also a desire for more game time.[3] A deal was finalised on the Saturday of the trade week, with a straight swap for Andrew Collins.[4]

Richmond

In his first season at Richmond in 2011, Grigg played 21 games, averaging 22 disposals a game playing a wing/defending role.[5] 2012 saw Grigg become a 'next level player'. He played 22 games, averaging 25.5 disposals and a goal, per game. He finished in fifth place in the best & fairest award, the Jack Dyer Medal.[6] and polled 11 votes in the Brownlow Medal.[7] In 2013, he played 23 games, averaged 20.6 disposals per game and kicked 15 goals. [8]
