Shamrock Rovers B is an Irish football team based in Dublin. Founded in 2013 as a reserve team of Shamrock Rovers F.C., and will play in League of Ireland First Division, holding home matches at Tallaght Stadium.

History

Founded in December 2013 as Shamrock Rovers B, having received permission from the Football Association of Ireland to enter the League of Ireland First Division for the 2014 season.[3] They will take the place vacated by Mervue United and Salthill Devon following their withdrawal to form the new entity Galway.[3] The club will not be eligible for promotion to Premier Division or entry to play-offs but Shamrock Rovers will still have to pay the full First Division affiliation fee.[4] Additionally the club will not be allowed participate in FAI Cup or League of Ireland Cup.[5] Shamrock Rovers B is first ever reserve team in League of Ireland although the practise is commonplace in Europe in the likes of Spain, Germany and Portugal.[5] The purpose of the club will be player development and will give young, talented players the chance to play at a higher level and get valuable experience of competitive football.[6] "The First Division team will provide an extra pathway for players into our first team in the future" said club chairman Jonathan Roche.[6] Other parameters imposed on the club will be that disciplinary sanctions imposed on Shamrock Rovers players will apply to both teams and Shamrock Rovers F.C. will be permitted to play a maximum of three outfield players and a goalkeeper in the First Division.[5]
