Shah Faesal (born 17 May 1983) is an Indian civil servant from the State of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2009, he became the first Kashmiri to top the Indian Civil Services Examination and the first candidate from Kashmir in several years to be selected to the Indian Administrative Service through open merit.[1] Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also congratulated him on his phenomenal success. He is a popular figure among Indian youth and is said to be a youth icon due to his active presence at public platform.[2][3][4][5][6]

Childhood and education

Shah Faesal was born in remote village Sogam, of Lolab Valley in Kupwara district of North Kashmir, to Ghulam Rasool Shah, a government school teacher who was killed by militants and Mubeena Shah who is also a government school teacher.

His home town, besides being known for the scenic beauty, Lolab Valley is famous for having been the birthplace of the great Islamic theologian and scholar, Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri.

Bureaucratic career

After successfully completing his training at LBSNAA, with his wish to serve people of Kashmir, he was allotted to Jammu and Kashmir Cadre and is presently serving in Bandipora District of Kashmir Valley as (Deputy Commissioner).
