Shades Valley High School is a public secondary school located in Irondale, Alabama. The school was established in 1948 near Homewood and was moved to its present location in Irondale in the fall of 1996.

Location

The Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School is located on the same campus. Dabbs Technical Academy is located several miles away on a different campus. The school's academies include business, theater, and technical. Because of the draw from the county, SVHS/JCIB serves a diverse student body population. SVHS/JCIB serves grades 9-12 and has an enrollment of 1182 students in the 2006–2007 school year. The administration consists of a principal and five assistant principals, one who primarily serves at JCIB.

Athletics

SVHS/JCIB colors are maroon and black, and the athletic teams are called the "Mounties". SVHS/JCIB has a variety of clubs which meety. Sports include football, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys tennis and golf, girls volleyball, track, girls and boys soccer, baseball and girls softball. The baseball team played for the state 4A championship in 1980, finishing runner-up to Davidson High of Mobile. The boy's basketball team has won numerous Jefferson County, region and area championships, as well as playing in the state final four in 1954, 1962, 1971, 1980 & 1984. Boy's basketball finished runner-up in the state in 1971 to A.H. Parker High of Birmingham. The girl's basketball team has also won numerous Jefferson County, region & area championships, and played in the state final four in 1997. The boy's soccer team won state championships in 2001, 2004, and 2006, and finished runner-up in 2000. The football team has won close to 500 games all-time, which is the most all-time wins for any team in Jefferson County. Football has also accumulated a total of 13 region & area championships, three undefeated regular seasons, and finished runner-up in the state in 1987 & 1994. The boys track team won the state championship in 1966. Also, the boys golf team won the state championship in 1957.

Drama

The SVHS/JCIB drama department is noted nationally as being one of the premier programs for drama.

Music

BAND - The Shades Valley High School band has competed in several local, regional, and national competitions with great success. Under the direction of David Allinder and Gregory Gumina, the marching band is considered one of the best in the state. During concert season, the band is considered by more than a few to be one of the best high school symphonic bands in the country.

CHOIR - The Shades Valley High School/Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School Choirs consist of Beginners Choir, Concert Choir and Valley Singers. Under the direction of Mrs. Gia Graddy, the choirs compete in local, state and national festivals and competitions. In 2009-2010, they received Superior ratings at the Fall and Spring District Performance Assessments, an Excellent rating at the Festival Disney competition and performed in the Jefferson County All-County Music Festival. The Choir also performs many local concerts. Mrs. Graddy has a Master of Music from Auburn University and a Bachelor of Music Education from Georgia College & State University.
