Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana (born 25 June 1956) is a Sri Lankan politician. He has been politically active since 1988, and was Member of Parliament under the United National Party from August 19, 1994 until his resignation on June 23, 2004. He resigned due to controversy surrounding his assistance in bringing members of the LTTE, including Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, to Colombo.[1] Moulana previous worked as Minister of Economic Development at the Embassy of Sri Lanka to the United States.

Early life

Moulana grew up in Eravur he attended St. Michael’s College Batticaloa.[2]

Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan

In 2004, Moulana was contacted by members of the LTTE who asked him to arrange passage for Muralitharan to Colombo and then on to another foreign country. Moulana agreed to do so on what he described as compassionate grounds.[2] However, Moulana also revealed the information to the leaders of his political party; later, they arranged for Muralitharan to be taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Army.[2] As a result of his working with the LTTE (then designated a terrorist organization), Moulana resigned.[1] Moulana left the country later in the year after having received death threats, and did not return until 2009.[3]

Eravur Urban Council

Since March 2011 Moulana was elected as Chairman of Eravur Urban Council. Eravur Urban Council is responsible for providing a variety of local public services including roads, sanitation, drains, housing, libraries, public parks and recreational facilities.

Member of Eastern provincial council

Ali zahir moulana was appointed as a member of Eastern provincial counicil in the place of Ameer ali who resigned his post. On 6th February 2015, He took oath before Gevernor of Eastern province Austin Fernando.[4][5]
