Seventh-day Adventist Higher Secondary School, popularly known as SD-High is a Co-Ed English-medium private academic higher secondary day school in Kochi, Kerala, India.

The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi, for Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Tenth grade) and Indian School Certificate (Twelfth grade) examinations.

History

The school opened its doors in 1971. It is operated and managed by the South West India Union of Seventh Day Adventist, Evergreen Lane, Moospet Road, Thrissur– 5. The school is affiliated to the Southern Asia Division of Seventh-day Adventists, a part of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The school falls under the Seventh-day Adventist educational system which is the second-largest Christian schooling system in the world. The Adventist educational program is comprehensive, encompassing "mental, physical, social and above all, spiritual health" with "intellectual growth and service to humanity" as its goal.

Affiliation

The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations and follows its curriculum. It offers two courses for the external examinations, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examination which is a K-10 public board examination for students in India who have just completed Grade 10 (equivalent to the first two years of the 4 year High School programme) and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination which is a K-12 public board examination for those completing Grade 12 (equivalent to the Senior Year/ Final Year of the 4 year High School programme). The school's affiliation number is CISCE/KE005/1979. The school is also a permanent examination centre of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations for both ISC and ICSE examinations. The syllabuses for Grades 1-8 have been chosen so that the classes would form a preparatory course towards the ICSE examination.

Courses

It offers two courses for the external examinations, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examination which is a K-10 public board examination for students in India who have just completed Grade 10 (equivalent to the first two years of the 4 year High School programme) and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination which is a K-12 public board examination for those completing Grade 12 (equivalent to the Senior Year/ Final Year of the 4 year High School programme). The Indian School Certificate is recognised by UK universities and so applicants are no longer required to obtain ‘A’ level qualifications or complete bridging courses, while seeking entry to Universities in the UK and other overseas Universities in the Commonwealth. The Indian School Certificate qualification is the only qualification from India that has been granted this special recognition. Certification under the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education board will be recognized around the world, particularly by foreign schools and universities when compared to the central board’s local margin. Due to the emphasis laid on English in ISC, students from this board may hold a slight edge over other students in exams like TOEFL, SAT, etc.

The school designs to provide an education for the harmonious development of the physical, mental, spiritual, social & cultural faculties of the students. It includes the concordant development of the mind, the training of the hand and the building of a noble character, making the children better citizens of this life and preparing them for life eternal. Academics

The medium of instruction in the school is English and the scheme of studies is in accordance with the scheme laid down by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations for Secondary and Higher Secondary stages. Special importance is given to English (including oral and aural English) for which a high standard is maintained. The school has Kindergarten (LKG & UKG), Primary School (Grades 1-4), Middle School (Grades 5-8) and High School (Grades 9-12) classes. The school has a three-termed examination system similar to the trimester system. Value Education/Moral Instruction is compulsory for all classes. Scriptural lessons from The Holy Bible is taught as Value Education. The school offers Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi as Second Language as well as Third Language. Students can opt one of the three languages towards their Second Language while one of the other two towards Third Language. Second language is compulsory for all students from Grade 1 to Grade 10 and third language is compulsory for all students from Grade 5 to Grade 7. Students of Grades 1-4 study English, Math, General Science, Social Studies, Value Education and a Second Language. Students of Grades 5 study English, Math, General Science, Social Studies, Value Education, a Second Language & a Third Language. Students of Grades 6 & 7 study English, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History & Civics, Geography, Computer Application, Value Education, a Second Language & a Third Language. Students of Grades 8-10 study English, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History & Civics, Geography, Computer Application, Value Education & a Second Language. Students of Grades 11 & 12 can choose their own stream of study and subject combinations at the time of admission to Grade 11. No student shall be permitted to change his/her subjects(s) after his/her admission in Grade 11. Compulsory English has two papers, Language & Literature. Physics, Chemistry, Biology & Computer Science also have two papers, Theory & Practical. Students offering such subjects must also take the practical examination; otherwise the subject in question will be considered incomplete. All other subjects i.e. Mathematics, Commerce, Accounts, Economics, Business Studies, Second Language & Elective English have only one paper, Theory. Science students are taught only sections A and B in Mathematics i.e. Pure Mathematics and Commerce students are taught section A and C i.e. Business Mathematics. In Physics, Electrotechnics and Nuclear Physics is covered in twelfth grade and Classical mechanics and Thermodynamics is covered in eleventh grade. The school makes coding knowledge in Java, a fundamental for high school students. The making of Computer Applications a compulsory subject gives students an opportunity to learn the programming fundamentals of Java and to develop a special interest in Coding and Computer Science as a whole.

Onam Celebrations

The Onam Celebrations of the school is associated with The Floral Carpet & Tug of war competitions.

Temperance Competition

The Temperance Competition conducted annually post the first term examination comprises Speech, Poster, Bible Quiz & General Knowledge Quiz competitions.

Art's Festival

The Art's Festival is the annual art's competition conducted at the school. The Debate Competition is also a part of the Art's Festival.

Science Exhibition

The Science Exhibition is the school's annual science fair.

Quizzes

The students of the school participate in the school's inter-class General Knowledge Quiz competitions created & administered by the Senior teachers of the school. The students of the school also participate and display outstanding performance in Inter-School quizzes like the TCS IT Wiz, The Hindu Young World Quiz and TIME Aqua Regia Quiz.

Olympiads

The students of the school participate and achieve greatly in various olympiad examinations organized by Science Olympiad Foundation, (SOF) and Silver Zone. SOF organizes the National Cyber Olympiad (NCO), the National Science Olympiad (NSO), the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) and the International English Olympiad (IEO). Silver Zone organizes the International Informatics Olympiad (iiO), the International Olympiad of Science(iOS), the International Olympiad of Mathematics (iOM), the International Olympiad of English Language (iOEL), the Akhil Bhartiya Hindi Olympiad (ABHO), the International Talent Hunt Oympiad (iTHO), the International French Language Olympiad (iFLO) and the SmartKid General Knowledge Olympiad (SKGKO).

Debates

The students of the school are excellent debaters and they participate in National Debate Championships including the Frank Anthony Memorial All-India Inter-School Debate conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations.Debates on various intriguing topics are held regularly for all high school students.

Creative Writing

The students of the school are excellent essayists, short story writers, poets & playwrights. The students of the school participate in the Albert Barrow Memorial All India Inter School Creative Writing Competition by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations.

Sports & Games

Annual Athletic Meet

The Annual Athletic Meet is the sports competition conducted annually at The Maharajas College Ground, M G Road, Kochi. Major events held are sprints (50 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres), jumps (long jump & high jump), shot put and 4×100 m relay.

Annual Games

The Annual Games are conducted annually at the school. Major games at the school are field hockey, badminton, volleyball, handball, throwball, dodgeball, basketball, football, kho kho, cricket, chess, scrabble, charades, hangman and carroms.

All classes have a Physical Education hour every week. Students can also stay back and play various games like hockey, volleyball, badminton, etc. The school also has a Sports Club, Art's Club & Literary Club.

Facilities

The school has excellent facilities with a large campus which includes 30 class rooms, a play ground, 3 laboratories,a library, a rest-room complex and administrative offices.

Library

The school has a library and reading room. It has a large collection of books ranging from periodicals to encyclopaedias and educational books.

Smart Class

The school is powered by TeachNext from Next Education learning solutions and offers smart class facilities for fun & intuitive learning. TeachNext ideally consists of Powerpoint presentations of the curriculum and also audio-visual presentations of the same.

Laboratories

The school has 3 labs. A physics & biology lab, a chemistry lab and a computer lab; all equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The computer lab is equipped with a multimedia projector and a teacher's computer equipped with the latest hardware & software. It also allows one computer per student and there is internet connection for accessing the World Wide Web and email facility.

Students who wish to pursue medicine write the AIIMS Entrance Examination to get into All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMSes) & All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT). Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

Students who wish to pursue university studies in humanities write the Indian Institute of Technology Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (IIT HSEE) for entry into the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore also offers an undergraduate program in humanities & social sciences. Social Welfare Services

Service towards humanity plays a role in building the character of students at SD-High, Kochi. Each student completes assignments of Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) and community service which form an essential and compulsory part of the ICSE & ISC curriculum. Students are also advised to learn Contemporary Studies which is an optional component of SUPW. The aim of contemporary studies is to provide to all students the ability to comprehend social transformations and develop in them the ability to utilize knowledge and skills to effectively address emerging opportunities. Students are taught:

  1. To analyse concepts and practices within socio-economic, political contexts in the society.
  2. To critically examine and evaluate various development strategies and experiences so as to be able to generate a viewpoint of their own.
  3. To understand the inter-relationships of development in the country, in the region and at the international levels in commerce, trade and socio-political areas.
  4. To develop a challenging attitude to act on the social and environmental matters in order to introduce change for a sustainable social order.
  5. To appreciate the conflicts of interests between social political organizations at the national and international levels and develop a comprehensive appraisal of their impact on the individual.

Students make visits to local institutions to offer voluntary service. They also collect funds from within the school for relief organizations like HelpAge India et al.

The School's Nature Club pursues issues such as environmental protection, wildlife conservation, and clean Kochi.

House System

The school has a well-defined house system and has four houses which are: Red, Green, Blue & Yellow. All competitions are inter-house competitions.The esteemed Champion's Trophy of the school is given to the house with the maximum number of points from all the competitions at the Year-Ending Ceremony during The Annual Day.

Student Body

The school has a strong and efficient student body known as The Prefects' Council. The Prefects' Council is headed by the Head-Boy & Head-Girl. The Prefects' Council also comprises the Captains & Vice Captains of the respective houses. The current Head-Boy is Mstr. Somanshu Arya & the current Head-Girl is Ms. Ipsita Joshi.

The school conducts it's year ending function, The Annual Day every year in the month of February. All-rounders, sports champions & students with academic excellence are congratulated and awarded during The Annual Day. Also, the house with the maximum number of points is awarded the Champion's Trophy.

Farewell

The school conducts the farewell / valedictory function every year in the month of February to bless the students graduating High School & Secondary School just before the study holidays for the ICSE & ISC exam.

Admission

The school admits students from Lower Kindergarten (LKG) to 8th Grade and to 12th Grade. The school prefers to admit children who complete three years six months of age to LKG and corresponding increase in age to higher classes for admission by the 1st of May every year. The school normally does not admit students to classes IX, X and XII. Proficiency in English is the chief criterion for admission. Application for admission must be made in the prescribed form. A written test will be conducted for students from 2nd Grade and upwards. The school management has the right to accept or reject any application without assigning the reason.

Campus

The school has a large multi-building campus with all necessary facilities. The school is divided into 4 blocks: primary block, science block, laboratory block & restroom complex.

Location

The school is located at Kaloor, Kochi, India on the Chammany Lane, half a kilometre South of the National Highway, midway between Kaloor bus stand and Lisie Hospital Junction.
