Serhii Plokhii (born 23 May 1957) also known as Serhii Plokhy, is the Mykhailo Hrushevskyi professor of Ukrainian history at Harvard University. He is the third Mykhailo Hrushevskyi professor at Harvard, following Omeljan Pritsak and Roman Szporluk.[1][2][3] He is specializing on the history of Ukraine, having lived and taught in Ukraine, Canada, and the United States.

Personal background

Plokhii was born in Nizhny Novgorod, along the Volga River in the Soviet Union. He is the son of Mykola and Lydia Plokhii. His father was a graduate of Zaporizhia Technical Institute, however, he spent the first two years of his career in Nizhny Novgorod, where he was assigned to work by the state government. Shortly after Plokhii's birth, his family moved to Zaporizhia, where he spent his childhood and formative years.[2]

Educational background

In 1980, Plokhii graduated from the Dnipropetrovsk National University, receiving his Bachelor's degree in social sciences and history. In 1982, he received his Masters degree from Patrice Lumumba University, and in 1990, received his PhD in history from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.[3]

Professional background

Prior to his career with Harvard University, Plokhii served as the professor of history with the University of Alberta and acting director of the Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies (CIUS). He served as associate director of the Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research at the Institute for ten years. Much of Plokhii's efforts were focused on directing the Hrushevsky Translation Project, as well as co-editing three volumes of the History of Ukraine Rus.[2]

While Plokhii's major contributions to intellectual pursuits have primarily focused on the early modern era from the 16th to the 18th centuries, his interests include research of the 19th and 20th centuries as well. His scholarly presentations have presented his research and studies of the religious and cultural developments of Ukrainian society from a historiographical viewpoint.[2]

Honors and awards

Serhii Plokhii is the winner of the 2015 Lionel Gelber Prize for The Last Empire: The Final Days of the Soviet Union.[4] In 2002, Plokhii was honoured as the Petro Jacyk Distinguished Fellow in Ukrainian Studies at Harvard University Research Institute (HURI).[2]

During the three years from 2002 to 2005, books written by Plokhii have won first prize of the American Association for Ukrainian Studies. In the fall of 2009, he was honored with the Early Slavic Studies Association Distinguished Scholarship Award.
