2006 September 21
- Ken Kutaragi reveals that contrary to previous announcements, HDMI will be included in all Japanese versions of the PlayStation 3. Also, the low-end model will retail not for 59,800¥ ($515) but for 49,980¥ ($429).[1]
2006 September 22
- SparkForge, a new video game developer with a focus on "Massively Scalable Online Games", has been formed by Jon Radoff, the creator of Legends of Future Past, one of the first MMORPGs.[2]
- The Tokyo Game Show 2006 begins at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. This year is the 10th anniversary for the show.[3]
- Guitar Hero developer Harmonix has been acquired by MTV Networks.[4]
2006 September 25
- Nintendo will ship 4 million units for the US launch of the Wii, which launches on November 19, 2006.[5]
2006 September 26
- A wrongful death claim filed by Jack Thompson in the trial of Cody Posey cites Grand Theft Auto: Vice City developer Rockstar Games, publisher Take-Two Interactive and Sony as defendants in the case.[6]
- Opera Software announces that the Internet Channel will be free of charge for all Wii users until June 2007. After that, the browser will be available for purchase from the Wii Shop Channel.[7]
2006 September 27
- The Truth in Video Game Rating Act is proposed by Senator Sam Brownback. The act would require the ESRB to have access to the full content of and hands-on time with the games it was to rate, rather than simply relying on the video demonstrations submitted by developers and publishers.[8][9]
- Microsoft Game Studios announces that Peter Jackson will develop a pair of new series exclusively for the Xbox 360. Jackson's Wingnut Interactive will work with Bungie Studios to co-create a completely new and original chapter in the Halo series.[10]
2006 September 28
- Gaming PC manufacturer VoodooPC has been acquired by Hewlett-Packard.[11]
2006 September 29
- The Video Game Decency Act is introduced by Senator Fred Upton. The aim of the legislation is "To prohibit deceptive acts and practices in the content rating and labeling of video games".[12]
