Senbag (Bengali: সেনবাগ) is an upazila of Noakhali District in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Senbag is located within an area of 155.83 square kilometres (60.2 sq mi), which is enclosed by Nangalkot upazila (to the north), Noakhali Sadar and Companiganj upazilas (south), Daganbhuyiyan upazila, Feni (east), with Begumganj and Laksam upazilas (to the west).

Administrative

Senbagh thana was turned into Senbagh Upazila in 1983. It consists of 9 Union parishads, 99 mouzas and 111 villages. The total area population is 216309; male 48.24%, female 51.76%; with Muslim 94.89%; Hindu 5.04%, Buddhist 0.07%. Of the unions of Senbagh Upazila, Domoria Union is one of the places in the upazila, as the people living in this Union are highly educated. Homnabad sreepur village is an Ideal village in the Union, One village in this union is Porikot which has a school, mosque, and many social institutions that set this village prominent among the villages. Kasher par union is one of in the upazila, as the people living in this union are highly educated. One village in this union is Kasher par which has a primary school, lot of mosque and Mazar, 4 kinder Garten, Kasher par Adarsha Kinder Garten and Knowledge Child Academy is well stablisted. Kasher par village is an Ideal village. Lot of famaous person born here. Dr. khondokar Moyazzam Hossain (formar MP), Dr. Khondokar Mozzammel Hossen (Chairmen Grameen Bank), Khondokar Abdul Owadud (formar goldmedalist chairmen), Mr. Ghulam Mostafa (Managing Director, Kallol group of Companies), Md.A.K.M Abul kasem (Din, Political science, Jahangirnagar university) and many of them. The relationships among the villagers are mentionable as they formed a close tie among them. Among the social welfare organizations, Munshi Atar Ali Welfare Society (MAAWS) is situated at Yarpur village in Kabilpur Union.

Religious institutions

Senbagh Upazila has the Mosque 312, temple 14, most noted of which is Senbagh Bazar Jami Mosque. The Senbag (town) consists of six mouzas. Domoria Sreepur Jami Mosque.

Town population

The total area of the town is 15.7 square kilometres (6.1 sq mi), and the population is 23,530: male 49.34%, female 50.66%; population density per km2 1499. The literacy rate among the town's people is 49.3%.

Literacy and educational institutions

The average literacy is 70.3%: male 50.3% and female 20.0%. Educational institutions include: government college 1, non-government college 2, government high school 2, non-government high school 23, madrasa 19, government primary school 79, and non-government primary school 41. Cultural organisations include: Rural club 17, cinema hall 1, and playground 14. The main occupations are: agriculture 30.14%, agricultural labourer 16.66%, wage labourer 1.96%, commerce 10.99%, service 23.54%, transport 2.52% and others 14.19%. About 1,000 women and girls received sewing training from MAAWS Sewing Training Institute by June 2011. MAAWS also founded a computer training school at village Earpur in Senbag. There is a village in Domoria union named Gazir hat where a High School (Gazir hat high school), a primary School, (Domoria primary School) etc., the Akbor ali khan College). There is a village in Kadra union named Mogua where a High School, a primary School, a Vocational High School situated. Freedom Fighter M A Azim Chowdhury is one of the founders and former Head Master of M A Ali High School and Vocational High School in Mogua Village. Assistant Judge of Munshigong District judge court Shahenara Akter, Grameenphone officer A Z M Fouz Ullah Chowdhury (Partho) and Dr. Ramjan Ali Salim are from the village of Mogua. Domoura and Mogua village are most popular in Senbag upazila.

Land use

The total cultivable land is 12,144.88 hectares (30,010.7 acres), with fallow land 923.51 hectares (2,282.0 acres), and cultivable land under irrigation 24%. For land control among the peasants, 32% are landless, 30% small, 26% intermediate and 12% rich. The cultivable land per head is 0.05 hectares (0.12 acres). The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately Tk 6000 per 0.01 hectare. The main crops are rice, jute, wheat, potato, brinjal, sugarcane, varieties of pulses, oil seed, betel leaf, and betel nut.

The extinct, or nearly extinct, crops include: linseed, sesame, sweet potato, mustard seed, aus and aman paddy. The main fruits are mango, jackfruit, papaya, coconut, banana, and dates.

Communication facilities and roads

The roads include: pucca 194 kilometres (121 mi), semi pucca 88 kilometres (55 mi) and mud road 275 km. The traditional transport is Palanquin, horse carriage, bullock cart and boat. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct. The manufacturing includes: rice mill 70, flour and chilli mill 40, ice factory 6. The cottage industries include: weaving 164, bamboo and cane work 480, blacksmith 61, potteries 48, wood work 163, brass work 25, jute and fabrics work 29. Hats and bazars are 22, most noted of which are Kankir Hat, Senbagh Bazar,Gazir hat Bazer, Chhamir Munshir Hat and Darbesh Hat; fair 1. The main exports are: rice, coconut, betel nut, banana, betel leaf.

For NGO activities, operationally important NGOs are BRAC, PROSHIKA, ASA, CARE, CARITAS and MAAWS. Health centres in the Upazila include: health complex 1 and MAAWS health complex 1, family planning centre 9.

Geography

Senbag is located at 22°59′00″N 91°14′00″E / 22.9833°N 91.2333°E. It has 38067 units of households and a total area of 155.83 square kilometres (60.2 sq mi).

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Senbag has a population of 216,309. Males are 48.24% of the population, and females 51.76%. This Upazila's eighteen-and-older population is 100,117. Senbag has an average literacy rate of 43.5% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]
