Semantic mapping (literacy)

Semantic mapping, in literacy, is a strategy for graphically representing concepts by constructing a semantic map.[1] In the literacy context, a semantic map is a graphical model designed to help students identify important ideas and how these ideas fit together in a text.

In a study of semantic mapping with third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students, Johnson, Toms-Bronowski, and Pittelman found that students receiving semantic mapping instruction significantly outperformed students in a context group on both immediate and delayed measures.[2]
