Seguin High School is a secondary school serving grades 9–12 located in Arlington, Texas and is part of the Arlington Independent School District. The school has around 1700 registered students.[1]

History

Seguin High School first opened in August 2002 and received formal dedication in November of that year. The school is classified as a UIL Class 5A school. Because the area has been built-out for some time and no new residential construction is planned, the school is anticipated to remain 5A.

Ed Farmer served as Principal from the opening of Seguin in 2002 until his retirement in January 2011. Michael Hill became Farmer's successor Jan. 20, 2011. On April 4th, 2013, Samuel Nix became Seguin's new principal. Nix served as principal of Carter Junior High School since 2011. [2]

Academics

In spring 2010 Seguin narrowly missed TEA requirements to be named a Recognized school. The school was 1% low in one sub-population in mathematics.

Seguin has several active academic organizations including NHS, UIL academics, Academic Decathlon, journalism, and Environmental Club.

Fine Arts

Band: Head Director is Mike Davis and assistant director in Grady Niblo. Assistant Director/Percussion Director is Andrew Hoskins. The band has three bands, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Concert Band.The Varsity Marching Band went to the State Marching Band Contest in 2005 and has established itself as one of the strongest bands in the area.

Orchestra: Director is Melina Shaffer. Assistant Director Kristin Davis. There are four Orchestras Concert, Symphonia, Philharmonic, and Symphonic. The Seguin orchestra has previously won sweepstakes at UIL for the years since the school opened and has continued to do so since.

Theater: Director is Luke Longacre. Tech Director is Lonnie Royal. In October of 2013 the Seguin Theater department produced Rabbit Hole a play written by David Lindsay-Abaire. This play went on to perform at the International Thespian Society convention in Dallas Texas as one of four plays in Texas to be shown as a main-stage play.

Athletics

Seguin has had numerous teams and individuals achievements over the years.

Girls Track has the highest finish with a 2nd place State Title in 2011, to go along with their Region 1-4A Championship. Coach Katra Ridgeway has been the Girls Head Coach since 2002. The Boys Track team had a Regional Championship in 2009 as well as individual State Meet medalists in 2008 an 2009. Michael Murphy has been the boys coach since 2002. Volleyball, Girls and Boys Basketball have all gone to the Regional UIL Tournaments. Girls Wrestling has had individual State Champions Like Erica McCleddon and Cheryce Moss, that have been coached by Bobby Morse.

UIL

Juan Seguin actively participates in Computer Science, Choir, Orchestra, Band, Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Softball, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball, and Wrestling.[3]
