The Secondary Board High School is a public high school in Cuttack. It is situated at the Bajrakabati road of Cuttack in the same premises of the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha. Established in 1959 by the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha, the school was created as a model high school for imparting education in the Odisha state board system. This high school has classes only from Std VI to X. On August 3, 2009 this school celebrated its Golden Jubilee.[1]
History
In 1952-53, the Mudaliar Commission’s Report on “Reform in the System of Secondary Education in India” [2] suggested a vast set of reforms for education system. At that time the eminent educationists-cum - policy makers for Odisha e.g. Prof B.C.Das, DPI, Shree H.Mishra, DDPI, Dr. S.Sahu and senior officials of Board of Secondary Education, Odisha conceived an idea to establish three model schools at Cuttack, Sambalpur & Berhampur respectively.
Under this initiative construction of a school, named “Secondary Board High School”, began at Cuttack in 1958. The school saw its first light on August 3, 1959 with 148 students including 31 girls, under the guidance of Shree Chakradhar Mohanty, deputed by BSE as Special Officer and nine teachers.
It was initially planned to have only three classes i.e. VI, VII & VIII and accordingly, admission process began on June 9, 1959 starting with Class-VI. On demand by local guardians, Classes–IX & X was introduced later. The first batch passed HSC Examination in 1962 with three years of study in the school, the fully trained first batch passed out in 1965 with all six years of study in the school
Gradually the strength of students grew up to 1100 by 1984.[3]
Campus And Buildings
The school shares the same campus as the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha, and the 2 buildings stand facing each other. Although the campus has a gate at the entrance on Bajrakabati Road, there are no clear demarcation or boundary walls for the entire campus.
House System
The school has classes from VI to X with 3 sections in clas VI & VII and 4 sections in classes VIII, IX, X. The unique feature of the school is each of the section or house is named after one of the states of India. On August 3 each year, when the school celebrates its annual day, each of the house makes a display of the rich culture of the state, it is associated with. This display is evaluated each year the best house is selected.
