The next Scottish local elections will take place in 2017, on Thursday 4 May. They will be for all 32 local authorities (see Local government in Scotland).

The last election was in 2012, normally these elections take place every four years, but this has been postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the next Scottish Parliament election, due to take place in 2016.

It is possible that the Scottish National Party and the Labour Party will be vying to be the largest party in Scotland, although they may both find themselves defending their relatively strong performance at the 2012 election against a challenge from some other parties. Although it may be difficult to say what the political context might be, given that a UK General Election and a Scottish General Election are scheduled to take place before then.
