Scottish Young Labour (SYL) is the youth wing of the Scottish Labour Party and forms a part of the UK-wide organisation Young Labour. It works with the Scottish Labour Students and the STUC Youth Committee, as well as other Labour Party affiliates.
Scottish Young Labour promotes the interests of Scottish Labour through youth involvement. The SYL has its own policy forum, as well as having members on the Scottish Policy Forum, the body which decides Scottish Labour party policy.[1] SYL exists to involve young people in the Labour Party and ensure that the aspirations of young people are reflected in Labour’s policies in power.
SYL relations
SYL works closely with Scottish Labour Students and the STUC Youth Committee, as well as other Labour Party affiliates. A number of Scottish Young Labour members are currently serving Councillors, while the 2010 election saw members elected to the House of Commons.
Scottish Young Labour is affiliated to Young Labour.
Campaigning
Scottish Young Labour is one of the Labour Party’s most effective and active campaigning forces, regularly delivering large numbers of activists to key campaigns all around the country. In the 2010 United Kingdom General Election Scottish Young Labour campaigned in all of Scotland’s key seats and played a large part in ensuring that Scottish Labour held all of their seats as well as gaining two.
SYL demonstrated its large and active membership muscle during the Scottish independence referendum 2014 as it brought large numbers of students and young people from across Scotland to campaign for Scotland to remain part of the United Kingdom
Scottish Young Labour along with Scottish Labour Students , campaign on university campuses fighting for changes like the Living Wage in our colleges and universities, reducing the number of Zero Hour Contracts & electing Labour Students in student unions
In addition to grassroots campaigning Scottish Young Labour also play a key role in deciding Labour Party policy. It has its own policy forum, as well as having dedicated seats on the Scottish Policy Forum – the body which ultimately decides party policy.
Membership
Scottish Young Labour is made up of all party members under the age of 27.
Membership of Scottish Young Labour is at its highest level in many years and is still growing.
Conference
Scottish Young Labour hosts an annual conference ever year in November. Scottish Young Labour also holds a range of additional national events, including several fringe sessions at the Scottish Labour Party's annual conference. The conference is opportunity to amend Scottish Young Labour or Scottish Labour Student's constitution, pass motions and hold liberation events i.e. Women, LGBT & Ethnic minorities. In the November 2014 conference, a constitutional amendment was passed to reserve either Chair/Vice Chair for a woman for Scottish Labour Students.

The governing body Scottish Labour Party Youth Committee is elected at the annual Scottish Young Labour Conference.[2]
