The Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) is a charity and membership organisation based in Stirling, Scotland. It provides support, training and information to childminders in Scotland. SCMA's convenor is Liz Stewart[3] and its chief executive is Maggie Simpson.[4]

Registration

By law, childminding services in Scotland must be registered with the Care Inspectorate, the independent regulator of social care and social work services across Scotland. The Care Inspectorate regulates childminding services according to the Public Services Reform (Scotland) Act 2010 and assesses their quality to make sure they meet the National Care Standards which are published by the Scottish Government.[5]

Quality assurance

The Association's Scheme of Excellence award has been officially recognised by the Scottish Qualifications Agency.[6]The scheme is a self-evaluation tool that demonstrates childminders' commitment to quality through partnership working with parents. It has been credit rated and levelled within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework at level six and holds ten credit points.[6]

Community Childminding

SCMA’s Community Childminding Service provides short-term childcare for families in need. In 2011, it received funding from Inspiring Scotland to operate a Community Childminding Service in Stirling and Fife.[7]

Communications

The Association publishes a quarterly magazine, Childminding magazine,[8] and operates a helpline.[9]
