Scott Boerma

Scott M. Boerma (born 1964) is a composer of contemporary classical music as well as the new Director of Bands at Western Michigan University. On Tuesday, January 8, 2013, he announced his resignation from the University of Michigan to take his "dream job" at his Alma Mater, Western Michigan University.[1][2] He began his new position at WMU in August 2013.

Biography

Before joining the Western Michigan faculty, Boerma was the Michigan Marching Band director (2007–2012) and musical arranger for the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps (1989–2006).[3] In 2009 Boerma served as the brass arranger for the Spirit Drum and Bugle Corps.[4] During his tenure with the Scouts, in addition to arranging music for several other Drum Corps in the United States, Boerma also arranged for marching bands and drum corps from Japan, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Thailand.

Boerma also served as the Director of Bands at Eastern Michigan University from 2001–2007.[5] He earned his Master of Music degree in music education from the University of Michigan in 1992, and his Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting from Michigan State University in 2010.[6] On December 8, 2013, Boerma announced his resignation from U of M to go to his "dream job" at Western Michigan University.

Works

Boerma's marching band arrangements have been performed by the Western Michigan University, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, the University of Texas, the University of Illinois, Texas Tech University, Baylor University, Jacksonville State University,[7] and Brigham Young University[8]

In addition to his many works for marching band, Boerma also has an extensive catalogue of works for concert band and wind ensemble. His original works have been performed by many different ensembles, including the Dallas Wind Symphony,[9] the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the University of Illinois Wind Symphony,[10] the University of North Texas Wind Symphony, the University of Michigan Concert Band, the BOA Honor Band of America, and the Interlochen Arts Camp High School Symphonic Band.

Boerma's works are published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company, Arrangers' Publishing Company and, Madison Music Works.

Recordings

Boerma's work Poem, a tribute to Bernie Kuschel, was recorded on the CD 2007 WASBE Killarney Ireland by the Dublin Concert Band.[11]
