SchoolTipline

SchoolTipline is a Utah-based company that focuses on combating school violence. They use a system that utilizes an anonymous tip line and mass alert system.

SchoolTipline is a third party service that specializes in facilitating the anonymous disclosure of information regarding activities or behavior within the school as well as how students or parents feel about their school. In a further effort to protect students, SchoolTipline encourages students to report incidents they witness both on and off campus. This confidential, anonymous system provides a way to report concerns and problems over the Internet.

SchoolTipline.com was created to break the code or culture of silence that exists in schools. It facilitates the sharing of safety information between students, parents, administrators, staff, counselors, and safety officers. Students often fail to report because they don’t feel anonymous and because they don’t know where or how to report. According to the National Institutes of Health, bullying is widespread in American schools, with more than 16 percent of U.S. school children saying they had been bullied by other students during a single term (semester).[1]

History of SchoolTipline

SchoolTipline was started by Justin Bergener as a student at Brigham Young University and launched in 2007.[2] With the help of Betty Ashbaker, who works in the Counseling Psychology and Special Education Department at the McKay School of Education, they began researching and building a web-based solution to the bullying problems across the country. SchoolTipline won honors at BYU's business plan competition and was followed up more recognition at the University of Texas's Moot Corp [3]

By 2008, SchoolTipline had launched their services in nearly 50 schools across the country [4]
