Scat Daddy

Scat Daddy (born May 11, 2004, in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse.

Background

Scat Daddy was sired by Johannesburg out of the mare Love Style. He was bred by Swiss book publisher and racing enthusiast Axel Wend. Sold by Hunter Valley Farm for $250,000 at the Keeneland yearling sale, he was bought by United Kingdom racing magnate Michael Tabor in partnership with Wall Street investment banker James T. Scatuorchio, a former executive with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.

Racing career

Racing at age two under trainer Todd Pletcher, Scat Daddy won the Sanford Stakes and defeated Nobiz Like Shobiz in winning the Champagne Stakes. He finished second to Circular Quay in the Hopeful Stakes and in his final race of 2006 was fourth in the 2006 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, far back of winner Street Sense.

Scat Daddy started his three-year-old campaign with a third-place finish in the 2007 Holy Bull Stakes behind Stormello and winner Nobiz Like Shobiz. He came back to win the Fountain of Youth Stakes and in his final race before the Kentucky Derby scored a 1⅛ length win in the Florida Derby.

The colt finished 18th in May's Kentucky Derby and emerged from the race cut and bruised. In June, he was retired from racing due to a tendon injury in his right foreleg that his handlers believe had its genesis in the Derby. Scat Daddy stands at stud at Ashford Stud in Lexington, Kentucky, and initially commanded a $30,000 fee for 2009. His fee for the 2011 season was $10,000 for a live foal, and that fee was increased to $17,500 in 2012. His most notable winners to date have been Lady of Shamrock (American Oaks), Daddy Long Legs (UAE Derby), and No Nay Never. He is the sire of leading Kentucky Derby contender El Kabier.^[1]
