Satish Gujral (born 25 December 1925) is an Indian painter, sculptor, muralist, graphic designer, writer and architect of the post-independent era.[1] He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.[2][3][4]

Early life

Satish Gujral was born in Jhelum, Punjab, British India.[5] His elder brother was former Indian prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral. At the age of 8, a sickness resulted in impairment of hearing. He studied at Mayo School of Arts, Lahore, J. J. School of Arts, Mumbai and Palacio Nationale de Belles Artes, Mexico.

Works

The partition of India[6] and the associated agony of the immigrants impacted a young Satish which manifested itself in the art works he created later. He was as an architect also and his design of the Belgium Embassy in New Delhi was selected by the international Forum of architects as one of the finest buildings built in the 20th century.

In Popular culture

Dozens of documentaries have been made recording his work and a full feature film on his life is in the making. A 24 minute documentary called "A Brush with Life" was released on 15 February 2012 which was based on his own book with the same name. Four books of his work have been published including an autobiography.[7]

Personal life

Satish Gujral is married to Kiran and has a son Mohit Gujral,who is an architect. Mohit is married to former supermodel, Feroze Gujral and have 2 daughters Alpana Gujral and Raseel Gujral.[8]

Awards

He was awarded India's second-highest civilian honor Padma Vibhushan in 1999. In April 2014, he was honored with NDTV Indian of the Year Award.[9]
