Sarkar (country subdivision)

Sarkar (Hindi: सरकार, Persian: سركار also spelt Circar) is an historical administrative unit,[1] used mostly in the Mughal states of India. It was a division of a Subah[1] or province. A sarkar was further divided into Mahallas or Parganas.[1]

The Sarkar system was replaced in the early 18th century by the Chakla system.[2]
