Santiago Vergini (born 3 August 1988) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays for English club Sunderland on loan from Estudiantes, as a centre back.

Club career

Club Olimpia

Vergini began his career at Vélez Sársfield, but never made the first team. In 2009, he made his professional debut for Paraguayan side Club Olimpia, ending his first season with 14 appearances and one goal. He then made four appearances in the 2010 season.

Hellas Verona

Lega Pro team Verona signed Vergini on loan in 2011, where he managed 16 appearances and 1 goal.

Newell's Old Boys

In 2011, he signed for Newell's Old Boys and scored 2 goals in 78 appearances. He departed in 2013.

Estudiantes de La Plata

Vergini signed for Estudiantes in 2013. He made 13 appearances and scored 1 goal.

Sunderland

On 20 January 2014, Vergini secured a loan move to Premier League side Sunderland for the remainder of the 2013–14 season.[3]

He made his league debut on 8 February, replacing Fabio Borini in the first half against Hull City after the dismissal of regular centre-back Wes Brown.[4] Due to Brown's suspension, Vergini made his first start on 22 February away to Arsenal, and made errors as Sunderland lost 4-1.[5] On 2 March, Vergini was an unused substitute as Sunderland lost the 2014 Football League Cup Final 31 to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.[6]

After several games playing in central defence, Gus Poyet slotted Vergini into the right back position due to injuries. He greatly improved his performances and helped Sunderland avoid relegation to finish 14th in the Premier League.

On 7 August 2014, he re-signed for Sunderland on a season-long loan for the 2014–15 campaign. A permanent deal could not be made due to co-ownership issues with the player.[7]

On 18 October 2014, in an 8–0 defeat at Southampton, Vergini opened the scoring in the 12th minute with what the BBC referred to as "one of the most bizarre own goals in Premier League history", volleying an attempted clearance past his own goalkeeper Vito Mannone from the edge of the penalty area. Manager Gus Poyet said "Even if you watch that 20 times, you don’t know how it can happen".[8]

International career

Vergini earned his first cap for Argentina in the Superclásico de las Américas against Brazil on 20 September 2012. He entered the match, which only domestic-based players could play, as a 73rd-minute substitute for Lisandro López as the Argentines lost 21 in Goiânia.[9] He returned to the team on 14 October 2014, playing the entirety of a 70 friendly win away to Hong Kong.[10]
