Sanjiv Goenka

Sanjiv Goenka (born January 29, 1961)^[1] is the Chairman of RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, a conglomerate which has an asset base of over US$4.3 billion. The Group has over 50,000 employees and over a hundred thousand shareholders with annual revenues of up to $2.6 billion. Sanjiv Goenka looks after the power and retail giant CESC Limited and the Group’s entertainment venture Saregama India Ltd (earlier called The Gramophone Company of India Ltd). He has built up the group’s retail business, led by the Spencer's retail chain^[2] that runs about 127 stores, including 34 large format stores, across 30 cities in India.

Goenka leads Phillips Carbon Black (today the world’s eighth largest carbon black manufacturer and India's largest exporter) and the group’s plantations company, Harrisons Malayalam.^[3]

In 2009-10, Sanjiv Goenka became president of the All India Management Association (AIMA).^[3]

CESC power plants earn carbon credits and have won several awards for their success in combating wastewater, fly ash and environmental pollution.^[3]

He is also one of the co-owner of a football team in Indian Super League , which is a football league team along with Sourav Ganguly, Harshavardhan Neotia, Atletico Madrid and Utsav Parekh of the Kolkata team.^[4]

Goenka has also taken over Firstsource Solutions Limited, this has diversified the Group into ITES field.^[3] Firstsource is among the top three pure play Business Process Outsourcing companies in India and has a network of delivery centres spread across India, Ireland, Phillippines, Sri Lanka, UK and USA.

Other activities

Goenka, a former member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry, is now serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Woodlands Medical Centre Ltd., a premier hospital located in Kolkata, where he has received the title of Honorary Consul of Canada.^[3]

Goenka is currently behind the Asia Institute of Power Management (AIPM) to train power-sector service professionals in collaboration with Singapore Power, and the International Management Institute (India) of Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata, a management school located in New Delhi. He was chairman of the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

Goenka became President of the Confederation of Indian Industry(CII) in April 2001, the youngest ever President of CII at 39 years of age. At 41, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP), succeeding his father.

Family

The younger son of RPG Group founder Dr. Rama Prasad Goenka, Sanjiv Goenka graduated from St. Xavier’s College Kolkata. He is married to Preeti, and they have a daughter, Avarna, and a son, Shashwat.

Since its establishment in 1820 as a family business by Ramdutt Goenka, the Goenkas have been into banking, textiles, tea and jute. Today it is a strong player in domains like power generation and distribution, retail, information technology, entertainment, power transmission infrastructure, chemicals, tyres, plantations and life sciences. Dr R P Goenka established RPG in 1979 with turnover of Rs 70 crores. Turnover today stands at Rs 16,000 crores, from 20-plus companies across eight business sectors and 40,000 employees.

In 2010, Rama Prasad 'RP' Goenka, who had expanded the business empire with a series of takeovers, formally divided his companies among his two sons, Harsh and Sanjiv. Sanjiv got CESC, Spencer's, Phillips Carbon Black, Saregama and a part of Harrisons Malayalam.
