Each class period is approximately 90 minutes in length. A full schedule is three classes per term. Final grades and credits are given at the end of each term, which equates to a semester under other systems.

There are many outstanding programs at San Marcos. Their nationally recognized Performing Arts Program includes theatre, marching band, jazz and concert bands and several choral groups. The school fields two successful Mock Trial teams that have won a highly competitive county competition numerous times as well as competing at the state level. An award-winning school newspaper, The King's Page," is published ten times a year by students in the journalism class. The award-winning Yearbook is The Crown and Sceptre.
Honor societies include the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) and National Honor Society (NHS). The GPA requirement for NHS is a 3.75 or above (a higher requirement than any other high school in Santa Barbara.)
All students are required to complete 60 hours of community service for graduation.
