The 2014 San Jose mayoral election was held on June 3, 2014 to elect the Mayor of San Jose, California.
Incumbent Democratic Mayor Chuck Reed is term-limited and cannot run for re-election to a third term in office.
The election is nonpartisan per California state law, although most of the candidates chose to state a political party affiliation. A primary election was held on June 3, 2014. As no candidate received a majority of the vote, a runoff election will be held between the top two vote-getters, Dave Cortese and Sam Liccardo, on November 4, 2014.[1]

Primary election
Cortese is backed by public safety and labor unions unhappy with Mayor Reed's cuts to police pay and benefits.[5] By contrast, Herrera, Liccardo, Nguyen and Oliverio are "Reed loyalists".[6] Similar battles are being played out in elections to the San Jose City Council, where a slate of union-endorsed candidates hopes to defeat Reed-supporting candidates.[7]
