Samuel "Sam" Roberts was a rugby union footballer of the 1880s, playing at representative level for England, and at club level for Swinton,[1] playing at Fullback, i.e. number 15. Prior to Tuesday 2 June 1896, Swinton were a rugby union club.
Playing career
International honours
Sam Roberts won caps for England while at Swinton in 1887 against Wales, and Ireland.[2]
Change of Code
When Swinton converted from the rugby union code to the rugby league code on Tuesday 2 June 1896, Sam Roberts would have been approximately 30 years of age. Consequently, he may have been both a rugby union and rugby league footballer for Swinton.
