Sam Anderson (born 25 March 1991) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer for the Penrith Panthers of the National Rugby League. He primarily plays prop, lock and second-row.

Playing career

Born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Anderson played his junior football for the West Maitland Reddogs and Kurri Kurri Bulldogs before being signed by the Newcastle Knights. He played for the Knights' NYC team in 2011.[1] At the end of the 2011 season, Anderson was named the Knights' NYC Player of the Year and the Players Player of the Year.

In October 2011, Anderson was forced to decide on whether to sign with the Penrith Panthers or re-sign with the Knights. Phil Gould, the coaching director of the Panthers, offered an easier path to first-grade football with the loss of prop Petero Civoniceva. However, Wayne Bennett, the coach of the Knights, personally told Anderson that he was in his future plans for the Knights.[2]

On 21 October 2011, Anderson re-signed with the Knights on a 1-year contract.[3]

In September 2012, Anderson signed a 1-year contract with the Penrith Panthers starting in 2013 after failing to make first-grade with the Knights in 2012.[4]

In Round 9 of the 2013 NRL season, Anderson made his NRL debut for the Panthers against the Melbourne Storm.[5]

On 17 July 2013, Anderson was chosen in the NSW Cup Representative team to play against Queensland residents in the curtain raiser to State Of Origin 3. NSW won 22-18

Anderson has just re-signed an upgraded contract for another year at Penrith and has his sights set on many more appearances in first grade after his debut year was interrupted by a serious ankle injury he suffered in his second NRL game. He has made one more first grade appearance in round 20 vs Sharks but the second tier salary cap has restricted his availability. He is currently playing well in NSW Cup and will feature in this years finals with his Windsor Wolves team mates.

On 22 September 2013, Anderson was named on the interchange bench in the 2013 New South Wales Cup Team of the Year. In October Sam was also named as the Panthers New South Wales Cup Player of the Year, so capped off a very successful 2013. [6] Sam was again selected in the NSW Cup Representative team as starting prop in the curtain raiser to this years State of Origin 3 played in Brisbane on July 9th 2014.Queensland won the game 22 - 16. He is currently in negotiations with Penrith for an extension to his contract for next season. His Penrith NSW Cup side have won the Minor Premiership for 2014. Anderson has returned to the NRL side and has played in the last 2 regular season games vs Manly and Warriors and also played in the win over The Roosters in the first week of the finals. Sam has re-signed with the Panthers for the 2015 season.

On 21 September 2014, Anderson was named on the interchange bench in the 2014 New South Wales Cup Team of the Year for the second year in a row.[7]
