Paul Salva,[1] better known by his stage name Salva, is an American record producer based in Los Angeles, California.[2] He is a resident DJ on BBC Radio 1's "In New DJs We Trust".[3] In 2012, he remixed Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz's "Mercy" with RL Grime.[4] He has also collaborated with Pusha T.[5]

Salva has remixed tracks by the likes of Matt & Kim,[6] Boys Noize,[7] Jamie Lidell,[8] Nelly Furtado,[9] The Glitch Mob,[10] Problem,[11] Sage The Gemini,[12] Chromeo,[13] and Shlohmo.[14] He is the founder of the now-defunct Frite Nite record label.[15]

Career

February 2011 saw the release of his first studio album, Complex Housing, on Friends of Friends.[16] It received reviews from The FADER,[17] Pitchfork Media,[18] Fact Magazine,[19] and Resident Advisor.[20] Complex Housing led to his acceptance into the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy[21] in Madrid, Spain where he studied and collaborated with icons including Nile Rodgers,[22] Mannie Fresh,[23] Tony Visconti,[24] RZA,[25] Trevor Horn[26] and Bootsy Collins.[27]

In 2012, Salva released his collaborative remix of Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz's "Mercy" with RL Grime.[28] "Mercy" held the #1 most popular track on Soundcloud in June 2012,[29] and was featured on Salva's own Power 106 "Jump Off" mixes.[30]

In 2013, Building off his "Mercy" remix, Salva performed live shows with Pusha T at both Winter Music Conference[31] and SXSW.[32] In February 2013, Salva released an EP titled Odd Furniture on Friends of Friends.[33] It received favorable reviews from Pitchfork Media,[34] Resident Advisor,[35] and Dummy Magazine.[36]

In October 2014, Salva released the Peacemaker mixtape.[37] Recorded in Red Bull studios in Los Angeles, it featured guest appearances from the likes of Kurupt, E-40, Schoolboy Q, Bad Lucc, Ballout, Freddie Gibbs, and Problem.[38]

Style and influences

Salva is primarily known for his work in hip-hop and dance music, drawing from a variety of influences including house, freestyle, boogie funk, and Miami bass.[39] Club-centric to its core, his electronic productions have been described as "music that sounds like it comes from a place of genuine adventurousness" by Nate Patrin of Pitchfork Media.[40] Patrin said, "From house to grime to bass, he'd find a way to make anything knock on his own terms, no matter what kind of dancefloor you pointed him toward."[41]
