Sacramento Theatre Company
The Sacramento Theatre Company is a non-profit Regional Professional Theatre in the Northern California city of Sacramento.
History
The Sacramento Theatre Company is the oldest theater troupe in Sacramento, The Sacramento Theatre Company was originally formed in 1942 to entertain locally stationed troops during World War II. STC was originally called the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre, until they opened the doors to their first theater home in 1949, The Eaglet Theatre. The Eaglet was built from canvas and wood to match its much older twin, the famed Eagle Theatre from the California Gold Rush period. The new theater benefited from the patronage of newspaper executive and heiress Eleanor McClatchy, an enthusiastic supporter of theater and the arts.
Mission Statement
The Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) strives to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education. STC produces engaging professional theatre, provides exceptional theatre training, and uses theatre as a tool for educational engagement.
Today
Today, the Sacramento Theater Company calls the H Street Theatre Complex home. The new stages are located on H and 15th street in Midtown Sacramento, the cultural heart of the city. Staging plays in three performance spaces, STC as it is known, has been instrumental in the budding careers of such regional theater professionals as playwright Richard Hellesen and director Tim Ocel and international superstar Tom Hanks.

The School of the Arts
STC understands that young people dream of careers in performing arts, but need an outlet and proper training. STC meets those needs by offering elementary, middle, and high school students after-school and weekend training programs.
Veteran actors, directors, designers, technicians, and producers – all with professional training and college degrees – provide hands-on training. Students flourish and gain momentum as they work toward enrollment in colleges and, ultimately, careers in professional theatre. Many of STC’s alumni – including Yale University student Alexander Dominitz, Northwestern University student Anna Miles, University of Michigan student Paige Silvester, and Royal Academy of Music graduate Maggie Elizabeth May – are enrolled in theatre programs at top universities or working on Broadway or London’s West End.
Sacramento Theatre Company's School of the Arts offers programs including:
- Young Professionals Conservatory - a rigorous, 10-month training program for students ages 12 through 18 who are interested in pursuing careers in professional theatre.
- Pre-Professional Ensemble - classes concentrating on character development, improvisation, and the rehearsal process, with incorporation of theatre games, scene study and audition techniques for students with all levels of experience.
- Ensemble Musical Workshops - a musical theatre workshop for ages 6-12, culminating in a full-length production on STC’s Mainstage.
- Act*Dance*Sing Camps - winter, spring or summer break camps with faculty including professional theatre artists and local teachers who lead students through a diverse curriculum that is based on teamwork, confidence-building and creative expression. Each session ends with the students’ presentation of their original work for family and friends
- Technical Theatre and Design Program - launched in September 2014, the 9-month program for students ages 14-18 focuses on training for careers in technical theatre and design.
