Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah is an upper secondary residential school located at Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. The school was established on 16 June 2003, on the Sekolah Alam Shah site, which the latter left for a new site in Putrajaya.[1]

History

As an outcome of Razak Report, Sekolah Alam Shah (SAS) was formed on 7 February 1963 at Kampung Congo (now Bandar Tun Razak), Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. However, just several months after its 40th anniversary celebration, SAS was relocated to a new modern school complex in Putrajaya. The Education Ministry then did not take long to make use of the still largely operational old premises. On 16 June 2003 a new school came into being on the site whilst still carrying the name of the fifth Selangor Ruler, the Alam Shah Science School.

ASiS campus is located in the outskirts of metropolitan Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The atmosphere is natural with old trees left untouched, including fruit trees like rambutans and durians. This contributes to the leafy areas around the school, besides giving students the chance to handpick fresh fruits during the seasons. The school site covers 34 acres, comprising three administration and classroom buildings, four hostel blocks, one dining hall, one teachers' apartment, one staff apartment, six teachers' quarters and a principal's bungalow.

Facilities include tennis, futsal and basketball courts, and a football/rugby field shared with Institut Perguruan Ilmu Khas. ASiS is surrounded by education institutions, which are the Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kuala Lumpur, Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras, Institut Perguruan Ilmu Khas,Institut Perguruan Teknik and is near to the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).[2] Also in the vicinity of the school is the KL Football Stadium that is the venue of ASiS' Annual Athletics Day.

Student selection is based on the achievement in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) nationwide, with co-curricular factors also put into consideration. The selection process is made by the Ministry of Education, as per all Malaysian public boarding schools (SBP). The first batch of students, calling themselves PIONEERs by that virtue, sat for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia SPM in 2004 with the number of candidates 84.

Each enrolment may cater for over 200 boys and is divided into three intakes.

The first principal was Tn. Hj. Mohd Idrus bin Abdul Hamid, who officially took up the position on the same day ASiS was inaugurated. He was assisted by the Vice Principals; Razmi Abdul Razak (Academics), Ahmad Shafrin Abdul Aziz (Student Affairs), and Rijaluddin Che Mat (Co-curriculum). The administration board remained unchanged until 2011, when Principal Mohd Idrus finally retired after eight years galvanising the school.

Thirteen teachers entered ASiS on the first day. Some of them, including then Principal Mohd Idrus, had been on the grounds long before the existence of ASiS as the workforce of Sekolah Alam Shah. On 12 September 2003 12 more teachers entered ASiS.

The school has expanded much since its inception. In 2009, the total number of ASiS teachers was 51, with 22 staff. The number of students reached around 500 per school year.

Challenges

The buildings of the school are mainly old and battered as it was built in the 1960s. Even though the school requested just a little bit of funding from the government for repairs and maintenance of the building, they've been turned down but received a rather tiny sum of money which is not enough for those purposes.

Houses

ASiS students are divided into four houses. Their placement in the hostel is made according to their respective houses. The houses compete for House of the Year award during the annual Nostalgia Abadi Dinner (the equivalent of the graduation day/dinner to most schools).

High Performance School

On 17 February 2011, in an announcement made by Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, ASiS was conferred the status High Performance School, or Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi (SBT) together with another 22 excellent schools. This batch of SBTs is an addition to the 20 schools elevated to such title earlier in 2010.[5]

Internationalisation programme

The Internationalisation Program the school's main annual agenda, aimed to expose the students to the world, especially in academics. In 2007, a delegation from ASiS comprising the administrators and prefects flew to Jakarta, Indonesia and visited education institutions, particularly schools and universities.

Amongst the countries visited are Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Australia and United Kingdom. Through this programme, ASiS forges ties with foreign education institutions. For instance, in the year 2007, ASiS signed an MoU with the Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (MWITS), an elite school under the special patronage of Thai government for the intellects. ASiS is the first Malaysian school to have a bond with MWITS.

In 2010, ASiS visited Lombok, Indonesia.[6] The students also went for humanitarian mission to Cambodia and Vietnam. The highlight of the year was when ASiS visited London, United Kingdom, and the students and teachers were given a chance to visit Oxford University. The school participated in the International Students Science Fair in Adelaide, Australia and Rits Super Science Fair 2010 at Kyoto, Japan and being the only representative from Malaysia.

In 2011 the school visited Beijing, China, Jakarta, Lombok and Sumbawa in Indonesia, Bangkok, Thailand, and attended the ISSF 2011, held at MWITS.

Entrepreneurship programme

In 2009, ASiS was chosen by ExxonMobil Corp's Malaysia subsidiaries as one of the six schools to compete in their entrepreneurship programme, which was the ExxonMobil Young Entrepreneur (EYE Programme).

30 shareholders in the school formed Young Emprasario'S (YES) Enterprise. The board of directors led by the CEO Siew Hao Yang, reformed the method of school business. They had received contracts to events such as HKSBP Bowling 2009 & 2010.

It consists of four VPs, for finance department, Human Resource department, Sales and Marketing department and Production Department.
