SMK Bahang is one of the secondary schools in Sabah[1] which is located at Penampang, Kota Kinabalu. SMK Bahang is the only school in Penampang which is located nearest to the capital city, Kota Kinabalu. The student of SMK Bahang are known as Budak Bahang, but some of them prefer the name Bahangite, a demonym for student of SMK Bahang.

The school is named after the village, namely Kampung Bahang, which is located near to Kampung Koidupan and KDCA (Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association). Majority of the students, including the staffs, came from Penampang and some of them are from Putatan, Luyang and near to the city of Kota Kinabalu. This is because SMK Bahang strategically located between Donggongon Town and capital city of Kota Kinabalu. Besides, SMK Bahang located mostly near to the local settlement, which is villages and residential areas in Penampang.

History

SMK Bahang was established in December 1994 and it was officially opened by the current Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, who was then the Minister of Education Malaysia, with the motto "Together Realizing the Educational Excellence (Bersama Merealisasikan Kecermelangan Pendidikan)". At the end of its of construction, the school had 24 classrooms.

On the opening day, 6 classrooms opened to accommodate 272 students from graduate students while a number of passed PMR students from other schools were placed here to further their studies in Form 4. The number of students increasing every year. One of the privileges available in SMK Bahang was the establishment of a special education class in January 1995. SMK Bahang special education class is only one class of secondary learning disabilities in the state of Sabah.

The classes from Form 1 to Form 3 are 1/2/3 Wawasan, 1/2/3 Perdana, 1/2/3 Bestari, 1/2/3 Cemerlang, 1/2/3 Dinamik, 1/2/3 Dedikasi and Peralihan (just Form 1). Meanwhile, Form 4 to Form 5 are 4/5 Science One, 4/5 Science Two, 4/5 Sport Science, 4/5 Perdana, 4/5 Bestari, 4/5 Cemerlang and 4/5 Dinamik. The Form 6, which is also known as a pre-university student, are categorized to 3 classes which are Upper/Lower 6 One, Upper/Lower 6 Two, and Upper/Lower 6 Three.

SMK Bahang is equipped with hi-tech science labs from Chemistry, Biology to Physics, which all labs are 8 altogether. The new school building (Academic Building and Administration Building) are scheduled to open in 2013.

Tragedy of 31 December 2004

On December 31, 2004, SMK Bahang had a tragedy when the highest floor of block A building was on fire. The school had another fire in 2002.[1] However, it did not prevent the school session of 2005. Computer labs, science labs and school canteens were fully utilized for teaching and learning process. Although the Form three students started their sessions 200 meter away in SK Bahang Penampang.

Sport houses

The sport houses in SMK Bahang were named after the colour of gemstone. Previously, SMK Bahang has 4 original sport houses or as known as rumah sukan in Malay language, but now the school has added 2 sport houses. So, there is 6 recent sport houses in school and their compete against each other on sports day in Kompleks Sukan Penampang, Donggongon. The school sport houses are:
