The S.L. Benfica futsal squad is a professional team based in Lisbon, Portugal. They play in the Liga Portuguesa de Futsal. Since its creation in 2001, the team has been a constant challenger for the championship and managed to win at least one trophy per season between 2005 and 2013. Benfica won all Portuguese titles (Triplete) in 2006–07 and 2011–12 seasons. Benfica is the only Portuguese team to have won the UEFA Futsal Cup and to be ranked first in UEFA Futsal Cup rankings, in 2012.[1]

History

Establishment

Established on 13 September 2001, Benfica in Futsal started in an autonomous management MPM, with Benfica only providing the facilities, medical staff and kits.[2] In his debut, it lost 3-2 to Miramar Futsal Clube with a goal from a future Benfica glory, André Lima, scoring the decisive goal,[3] notable players in first season where Portugal national futsal team Naná, Vitinho I, Drula and Nelito, coached by Alipio Matos. The following season with new players like André Lima,[4] Rogério Vilela,[5] Pedro Costa and Arnaldo Pereira [6] they win their first championship against Sporting CP [7] and their first Portuguese Cup,[8] and finally, their first Supercup [9]

In 2003–04, notable players Ciço and Ricardinho joined Benfica.[10] Benfica reached the 2003–04 UEFA Futsal Cup final, losing it to Interviu.[11]

Adil Amarante years

In 2004–05, Adil Amarante replaced Alipio Matos, and added Nelito, Estrela and Pica Pau.[12] Benfica win the Portuguese Cup against Boavista FC [13] and the second championship against Sporting CP.[14]

The next season, players like Wilson [15] Côco [16] and Sidney all joined Benfica, while Zé Maria left.[17][18] Benfica lost the Taça de Portugal de Futsal to Sporting CP in the Final Four.[19] and then the Liga Portuguesa de Futsal to Sporting CP too.[20]

In 2006–07, Benfica improved his squad with new players, like Gonçalo Alves, Bebé, Pedro Costa, Zé Maria and Estrela which returned. Nelito ended his career.[21] Benfica conquered the Supercup.[22] In January, Alex joined Benfica,[23] in May Benfica win's another Portuguese Cup [24] and by June, another championship [25]

For 2007–08, Arnaldo Pereira and Miguel Almeida returned,[26] while Estrela left. Benfica started the season by winning the Supercup.[27] In January, César Paulo joined Benfica,[28] in March, Adil Amarante left in disagreement with Benfica about his new contract,[29] he was replaced with Beto Aranha,[30] he managed to lead Benfica to his first Two time Championship.[31]

André Lima years

In July 2008, despite being in charge only for four months, Benfica replaced Beto Aranha with former player André Lima.[32] Only reinforcement was Pedrinho, while Miguel Almeida left.[33] Benfica lost the Supercup [34] but managed to win the Taça de Portugal de Futsal [35] and the third Championship in a row for the first time [36]

In 2009–10, Benfica hired Davi and Marinho.[37] Benfica managed to win their 13º title, the Supercup.[38]

In 25 April 2010, Benfica conquered its biggest trophy to date, the UEFA Futsal Cup, after defeating Luparense by 8-4 in the semi-finals, they won 3-2 to Interviu in the final, Benfica conceded first by Marquinho, but Joel Queirós and then Arnaldo put Benfica in front, Interviu equalised by Betão, but Davi in the final minutes sealed the historic win.[39][40]

The rest of season was disappointing, Benfica lost the Portuguese Cup to Os Belenenses [41] and then the Liga Portuguesa de Futsal to Sporting CP [42]

Recent years

For 2010–11, Paulo Fernandes which had just won the Championship to Sporting CP, replaced André Lima.[43] Ricardinho left [44] and was replaced with Diece,[45] another addition's was Diego Sol which arrived from Os Belenenses and Teka from Sporting CP.[46][47] The season was a complete failure, Benfica lost the Portuguese Cup [48] and then Championship in just 3 matches, despite winning the regular phase.[49] Benfica, as the holder, also showed a pale image of his former self, finishing in fourth in the 2010–11 UEFA Futsal Cup.[50]

In 2011–12, Benfica added Marcão, Dentinho and Bruno Coelho.[51] The season fared much better than the previous and Benfica won all the 3 competitions it entered, the Supercup,[52] Portuguese Cup [53] and finally Championship [54] Ricardinho returned in January on a 6 months-loan [55] but failed to make an impact, being suspended on 3 games of the final [56][57]

For 2012–13, Benfica hired Vitor Hugo [58] and Nené.[59] On 2 September 2012, the club won its 6th SuperTaça against Modicus (5-3) and became the most successful club in Portuguese futsal.[60] After a series of bad results, including an early exit of the UEFA Futsal Cup,[61] Paulo Fernandes was sacked and replaced with João Freitas Pinto.[62] However, Benfica failed to retain the title, losing 3-1 in the final against Sporting CP.[63] In the offseason, Benfica didn't renew the contract of Davi, Diego Sol, Diece, Marinho and César Paulo, replacing them with Ricardo Fernandes, Pablo del Moral, Rafael Henmi, Serginho, Bruno Pinto, Paulinho, Alan Brandi and Ivo Oliveira.[64]
