History

The municipality of Sør-Rana was established on 1 July 1929 when it was separated from the municipality of Hemnes. Initially, the new municipality had a population of 1,708. The rest of Sør-Rana (south of the Ranfjorden), with 934 inhabitants, was merged back into the municipality of Hemnes.[2]
