Christina McGeehan,[3] better known for her stage name Ryat (often stylized as RYAT[4] and pronounced "riot"[5]), is an American record producer based in Los Angeles, California.[6]
Her 2012 album, Totem, was released on Brainfeeder.[7]
Early life
Christina McGeehan was born in New Jersey.[8] She attended Kutztown University, majoring in music.[9] Ryat was created in 2006 when McGeehan moved to Philadelphia. There, she met DJ/producer King Britt who encouraged her to produce her own music. There she studied music programming, producing and hosted improvisation sessions.[9] Soon after she met Tim Conley at a jam session at his house. After their band As Human split, Ryat asked Tim Conley to join her on tour.[9]
Career
Ryat released the debut album, Street Noise Orkestra, in 2009.[10] The second album, Avant Gold, was released in 2011.[11]
Ryat's live show got the attention of Flying Lotus who later invited her to join his label, Brainfeeder.[12] She relocated to Los Angeles and was inspired by the natural surroundings and mysticism.[10] The third album, Totem, was released on the label in 2012.[13]
Style and influences
Ryat is known for her "maximalist production" in her approach,[14] often experimenting in electronics, odd time signatures, vocal looping and lush soundscapes.[15] She often combines classical cinematic sounds, with glitchy samples and big beats, often compared with the artists like Bjork.[16] Her music has been described as "Beat Couture."
