Ryan Anthony Williams (born 8 April 1991) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Football League Two side Morecambe.
Career
Born in Birkenhead, Williams came through the youth ranks at Chester City and was promoted to the club's first team during the 2008–2009 season at 17. Chester were relegated from the Football League at the end of the year and midway through the following season Chester were liquidated.
Later that season Williams signed for Colwyn Bay and helped them achieve promotion to the Unibond Premier League. Next season aged 19 Williams joined Llandudno scoring in each of his first 3 games. He went on to make the League Team of the Year and earned a move to Welsh Premier League side Rhyl. Here he went on to score 6 goals in his first 8 appearances from midfield and again made the League Team of the Year. It was at Rhyl Williams started to catch the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid, the most notable being Ross County of Scotland. In November 2012 Williams signed for Morecambe but was unable to make his debut until the January transfer window opened. Williams went on to make his debut in January 2013 away at Plymouth Argyle scoring a spectacular 25 yard goal. Two weeks later Williams came off the bench to score the winning goal against Dagenham & Redbridge in a 2-1 victory. The following week he made his first start in the Football League in a 4-1 away win at York City. Williams then picked up successive Man of the Match awards against Exeter and Aldershot, soon after he signed a new contract until the end of the 2013–14 season with Morecambe.[2]
On 6 August 2013, after 84 minutes of Morecambe's first-round League Cup tie, Williams produced an "unstoppable" 20-yard (18 m) free-kick to eliminate Wolverhampton Wanderers.[3] This was followed up with a long range goal in the next match against Torquay four days later. Williams went on to score a 35-yard free kick away at Bury, which gained publicity as Williams began to get a reputation for long-distance goals.
On 18 February 2014, Williams extended his Morecambe contract until the end of the 2014–15 season.[4]
