Ryan Sheridan (born 28 January 1982) is an Irish singer, songwriter and guitarist from County Monaghan.^[2]

Early life

Sheridan started playing the fiddle at the age of seven^[3] and played Irish traditional music with Comhaltas for several years.^[4] At the age of 16 he left Ireland to perform as a dancer with the Riverdance ensemble. He toured the US with Riverdance for four years and then spent two years performing at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway.^[5] Sheridan started writing music and playing guitar while living in New York, and in 2004 Ryan moved to Glasgow to form the rockband Shiversaint. He returned to Ireland in 2006 and met Polish percussionist and cajon player Artur Graczyk who joined the band. When the band split, Sheridan took a two-year break from music to run a venue in his hometown of Monaghan.

Music career

Sheridan and Graczyk were discovered in Dublin by their future manager, Brian Whitehead on 23 March 2010. When Whitehead saw them playing a cover of Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons in Grafton Street, he stopped and listened for ten minutes before he dropped his card in Sheridan's guitar case. Whitehead nominated Sheridan's song Machine for the SupaJam competition to win the opportunity to play at the Festival Internacional de Benicàssim in Spain. Sheridan won the competition beating out 3,226 other entries.^[6] He played on the Eastpack FIB Club Stage on 17 July.

After a showcase at The Academy in Dublin,^[7] he got a record deal with Rubyworks Records and his first single Jigsaw (produced by Billy Farrell) was released in September 2010. Jigsaw was an immediate hit on Irish radio and on iTunes. In December 2010, Sheridan played his first headline tour around Ireland. He also appeared on Other Voices^[8] on RTÉ Two television in Ireland. Two songs from this performance was released on the album Other Voices: Series 9, Vol 3 (Live) on 30 Aug, 2013.

2011

Ryan Sheridan started the year with an appearance on The Late Late Show on 21 Jan.

Ryan Sheridan released his debut album, The Day You Live Forever, in Ireland on 6 May 2011 with leading Irish independent label Rubyworks, who licensed the album to Universal Music Germany, and will continue to be involved in his releases. The album reached platinum sales status in Ireland and it’s testament not only to its inherent melodic rock/pop strengths but also to Ryan’s durable presence on the gig circuit, where amidst his own energy-driven, charismatic shows, he has joined The Script, Bryan Adams, Simply Red as special guest amongst others and most recently joined Rea Garvey as special guest on his European tour.

Ryan Sheridan’s debut album announced a new and substantial Irish talent that can easily stand up to international scrutiny. The best songs, he says, are borne out of travelling and experiencing different things – of flexing life’s muscles and spreading the wings a little bit. Ryan has done just that and more over the past ten years and will continue to do so as he delivers the Sheridan Songbook into Europe and beyond. The album contained the singles Jigsaw, The Dreamer and Stand Up Tall. The album debuted at number two^[9] on the Irish Albums Chart and was certified with gold sales after five weeks.^[10] It was produced by Joe Chester and all the songs on the album were composed by Sheridan. "Stand Up Tall", the third single from The Day You Live Forever, was released on 16 September 2011.

Sheridan was a featured artist at the Concert for Obama on College Green in May 2011^[11] and is an ambassador for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ireland.^[12]

On 17 September 2011, Sheridan was the first artist to play Croke Park and Aviva Stadium at the same day.^[13] He also played two songs during the 2011 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final in Croke Park on 18 September 2011.

Sheridan's concert in The Academy on 5 November 2011 was his biggest Dublin show to date. Support acts were singer/songwriter Sara Lou and Consumer Love Affair, with a guest performance by Crowded House bass guitarist Nick Seymour and Tomas Cosinski on guitar. Halfway through the concert Graczyk switched from playing cajon to drums and bass guitarist Neil Dorrington joined the band.

On 25 November 2011, Ryan released a four-track Christmas EP Walking In The Air, with all profits from the sales of the single being donated to Make-A-Wish Ireland. The single was in the top ten of the Irish Singles Chart for Christmas 2011.^[14] On 23 December Ryan visited The Late Late Show on RTE Television for the second time and the same evening Walking In The Air was number one on the Irish iTunes charts.^[15]

Sheridan's video Stand Up Tall directed by Simon Eustace was nominated for best male video 2011 by IMTV - Irish Music Television.

2012

Ryan's song Take It All Back from The Day You Live Forever featured on Raw (TV series) season 4, episode 1 on RTE One^[16]

In January Ryan's track The Dreamer provided the soundtrack to a Heineken commercial ^[17]

At the start of 2012 electric guitarist Nicky Brennan joined Ryan Sheridan's band.

In March Ryan appeared on Bernard Dunne's RTÉ Bród Club performing The Day You Live Forever as gaeilge. ^[18]

On 20 April Ryan Sheridan was presented with a platinum plaque for his debut album The Day You Live Forever ^[19] at his sold out show in The Olympia Theatre, Dublin.

Ryan Sheridan played his first London show at the Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park on 15 July.^[20]

On Thursday 27 September, Ryan played a headline performance at The Palace Nightclub on Camden Street in Dublin as part of their Arthur's Day Celebrations.

On 1 November, Ryan signed an international record deal with Universal Music Germany.

He played at the Being Young and Irish seminar launched by President Michael D Higgins on 17 November.

Ryan Sheridan was headliner at GiftedLive.com at Monroes in Galway on 22 November. This is a show streaming live online. ^[21] On 29 November Ryan played his first headline show in London, at Monto Water Rats.

2013

Ryan Sheridan (2013)

Ryan Sheridan has toured Germany twice so far this year with Rea Garvey in January/February followed by Silly in May and performed to approximately 60,000 people in a matter of months.

The song The Dreamer from Ryan's debut album was featured in The Hardy Bucks Movie soundtrack, album released in Ireland on 22 Feb.

On 12 April, new single Upside Down was released in Ireland. The same night Ryan performed his new song on The Late Late Show with a full band: Nicky Brennan on guitar, Jimmy Rainsford on drums and Tanya O'Callaghan on bass.

On 26 April, The Day You Live Forever was released in Germany. Two new songs were added on the German release: Upside Down and Without You. The following week the album reached the top position on the German iTunes chart.^[22] As of July 2013, Ryan Sheridan’s debut album The Day You Live Forever is currently the highest ranked debut album by an International artist on the Official German charts. Released by Universal Music Germany, The Day You Live Forever went straight to the number 1 spot in the German iTunes album charts on its release. Since January 2013, Ryan Sheridan has been flying back and forth to Germany for multiple primetime TV and Radio appearances and live dates ahead of his first headline tour in Germany this October. The tour looks set to sell out months in advance with promoters having to add extra dates and move shows to bigger venues to meet demand.

Ryan performed his song Jigsaw on the final show of The Voice of Ireland with winner Keith Hanley on 28 April. On 3 May, Ryan made his first German TV performance on Sat.1 Frühstücksfernsehen.^[23]

On 4 May, Ryan Sheridan announced that cajon player Artur Graczyk had decided to leave the band.

Jimmy Rainsford was announced as the new drummer in Ryan Sheridan's band on 4 May.

Bass player Sean Brennan joins the band in May.

The whole band go on a sold-out tour of Germany for 'The Day You Live Forever tour' from the 7th until 29 October 2013.

On Nov 1, Ryan performed at the Brian O'Driscoll testimonial dinner in Dublin.^[24]

Ryan's song Awake was featured on the album Simple Things for Cycle Against Suicide. The album was released on 15 Nov.

At New Year's Eve 2013 Ryan played at the Countdown Concert at College Green in Dublin.^[25]

2014

The Day You Live Forever tour part two took place in Germany in February/March. 12 dates were added to the original tour due to demand.

Sean Brennan leaves the band after the German tour. Darren Sweeney joins as new bass player.

In April 2014 Ryan and his band played in Bahrain as part of the Bahrain Irish Festival.

On April 26 Ryan was back in Germany, playing with a 75 piece orchestra for 6000 guests at Pop meets Classic in Braunschweig.

Ryan Sheridan writes song 'Home' for Mrs Brown's Boys D' Movie and music video features Irish people (mix of famous and not) writing what they miss about home. ^[26]
