Ryan Beckman (born January 2, 1990 in Fort Worth, Texas) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. Beckman was drafted in 18th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009.

Amateur career

Ryan finished his amateur baseball career in 2009 at Grayson County College in Denison, Texas.

Professional career

Ryan started the 2011 season with a quick stint playing for the West Virginia Power in the South Atlantic League. On April 17, 2011 Ryan was promoted to the Class High-A Bradenton Marauders.[1] He finished the season in Bradenton with a 3.12 Earned Run Average and only allowed one home run in 42 appearances. The one home run was hit by Cory Vaughn of the St. Lucie Mets.[2] It went an estimated 512 feet.

Beckman played in the Australian Baseball League from November 2011 to January 2012. He pitched for the Adelaide Bite and was elected to play in the ABL's annual all star game on December 12, 2011.[3]

Beckman had Tommy John surgery on June 12, 2012.[4]

Nickname

Ryan has become known as "The Butcher" throughout professional baseball. The nickname was given to him by his teammates on the Adelaide Bite in 2011. Before a team barbecue Ryan carved up 15 pounds of kangaroo meat to throw on the grill. His teammates were so impressed, Ryan subsequently earned the nickname "The Butcher".
