AFL career

Bastinac was drafted by North Melbourne with the 21st overall selection of the 2009 AFL Draft from the Dandenong Stingrays.

2010

Bastinac made his debut in Round 1 of the 2010 season against Port Adelaide. He gathered an impressive 23 disposals however, despite a late surge, North Melbourne would lose the game by 14 points.

Bastinac continued his impressive start to his career by racking up another 24 touches against West Coast in Round 3. He negated the impact of West Coast stars Daniel Kerr and Matthew Priddis in the process which won him the nomination for the 2010 AFL Rising Star.[2]

Bastinac would go on to play out the remainder of the season averaging almost 19 disposals, 2.5 tackles and taking 54 marks over the 22 games. He kicked seven goals over the course of the season including a superb first quarter effort against Fremantle in Round 19 where he banged in three goals.

Bastinac's fantastic debut season received high recognition as displayed in the voting for the 2010 AFL Rising Star where he placed 5th.
