Rudy Markussen (born 24 July 1977 in Copenhagen, Denmark), known as the Hardhitter, is a professional boxer in the Super Middleweight division. During his career Markussen was the number 1 challenger for the IBF Super Middleweight World title, but lost to the title-holder Sven Ottke, his first loss in 28 fights. Afterwards he won the WBO Inter-Continental Super Middleweight title, and the EBU (European) Super Middleweight title.
In 2006 Markussen was in a car accident, which temporary stopped his career. Everybody, including himself, thought his career was over. But made a comeback in 2010 and had 6 fights in the years 2010-2012. (5 wins, 1 loss). His last fight so far, was on december 8th 2012. He is currently negotiating to make a comeback in 2015.
Markussen is currently in the Light Heavyweight division, after 15 years in the Super Middleweight division.
Career
Ottke fight
After the other Dane Mads Larsen lost his fight to Sven Ottke, Markussen was demanded by the Danish media to win fight against the undefeated German. Two undefeated fighters - Ottke (28-0, 5 KO) and Markussen (27-0, 16 KO) - facing each other for the IBF Super Middleweight title. With Ottke's 15 title defenses, the Dane was on the paper clearly the underdog. But Markussen showed he wanted the title, and many commentators and experts meant that Markussen deserved the win. All three judges scored the bout 116-112 in favor of Sven Ottke.
Magee fight
In February 2012, Rudy was gonna face the reigning WBA Regular champion Brian Magee in Brøndby Hallen, Denmark. It was the same story as the Ottke-fight in 2002, that the other Dane Mads Larsen met the same man, but both Danes lost. This time Markussen had to take revenge for Mads Larsen against Brian Magee. It was the second time in his career the Dane was going into a World title-fight. The last time was in 2002 where he faced Sven Ottke for the IBF Super Middleweight title.
Before the Magee fight, Markussen hasn't lost any fight since he temporary stopped his career in 2006. But Magee changed on that in the fifth round with a punch to the liver. Markussen couldn't take that and was knocked out.[1]
Switching from Mogens Palle to Team Sauerland
After Markussen temporary stopped his career after a car accident, he also criticized his promoter Mogens Palle for being selfish and destroying his career. Markussen meant that Mogens Palle didn't give him enough money. Both men has criticized each other in the media.[2]
After Markussen made his comeback in 2010, he signed a contract with German Team Sauerland. He is one of many Danish boxers of Team Sauerland including Mikkel Kessler, Mads Larsen, Patrick Nielsen, etc,[3] with Sauerland featuring him in his last 2 fights on their Viasat Nordic Fight Night cards.
Both Markussen and Kalle Sauerland are planning a coming up title-fight for Markussen. It's the plan that he's gonna face a title holder in the start of 2014, if he stays undefeated until then. First of all a European title, and if that goes out successfully he's gonna get a World title fight. Markussen can't say who he wants to meet, he'll wait and see until then.[4] The title holders in Light heavyweight right now is Beibut Shumenov (WBA), Chad Dawson (WBC), Nathan Cleverly (WBO) and Bernard Hopkins (IBF).
Other boxers like Tavoris Cloud, Lucian Bute and Jean Pascal, who don't have a title, are in top 6 on BoxRec's Light heavyweight ranking, could be an opportunity for Markussen.[5]
Injury before Blackledge fight
Markussen suffered a herniated disk in his neck up to his fight against the undefeated Luke Blackledge. He is now wondering to completely finish his career, because it's a big risk to take for his own health. Markussen has earlier in his career suffered bad injuries, and this might be the last one.
