Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts
The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts or RSWT is a registered charity,[1] incorporated by Royal Charter to promote conservation and manage environmental funds. It is based at Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire.
The RSWT was previously known by the names Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves and Royal Society for Nature Conservation.
History
The forerunner of the RSWT, the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves, was established by Charles Rothschild in 1912. It aimed initially to draw up a list of the country's best wildlife sites with a view to purchase for protection as nature reserves, and by 1915 it had drawn up a list of 284, known as Rothschild Reserves.[2]
The Wildlife Trusts
RSWT is the umbrella organisation for the 47 independently funded and managed local wildlife trusts in the United Kingdom. As such, the society trades as and is commonly known by the name The Wildlife Trusts.
See The Wildlife Trusts for details of the history of RSWT.
Other activities
RSWT operates a separate grants unit which administers a number of funds.
