Rose (given name)

Rose is female given name. Late Latin name derived from rosa, meaning "rose". Nicknames are Rosa, Rosalie, Rosina, Rosaria, Rosie. Similar names are Rosanna, Roseanne, Rosamunde.

History

Rose was originally a Norman form of a German name Hrodheid, composed of the words Hrod (Bright/Flame) and Heid (Kind). It was originally spelled (by the Normans) Roese or Rohese.[1] It fell out of use during the Middle Ages but was revived during the 19th Century although regarded as being a flower name. Because of the shift in meaning it is now regarded as a girl's name. The name of the flower has the etymology of Old English rōse from the Latin rosa; akin to Greek rhódon, which is independent from the etymology of the surname Rose, thus there is a distinction between individuals named after the surname and those named after the flower.[2]

This was the name of a 12th-century Sicilian saint.
