Roschier

Roschier is a leading law firm in the Nordic region, with offices in Finland and Sweden.

History

The firm was founded in Helsinki 1936 by Åke Roschier-Holmberg and soon took on a second partner, Arne Waselius.[1]

Since its early days, the firm had a focus on business law. Åke Roschier-Holmberg held the title of legal advisor to the British Embassy in Finland since the 1940s[2] and was also President of the Finnish Bar Association between 1968 and 1972.[3]

Up until the 1970s, Roschier had two partners and employed anywhere from one to three associate lawyers at any given time. By the mid 1990s, the firm had grown to approximately 40 lawyers and founded offices in Vaasa (Finland) and London (UK). The London office was closed down in 2002, but the Vaasa office remains today. However, the real growth spurt of the firm took place in the 2000s.[4]

In 2004, Roschier formed a Baltic alliance with Raidla & Partners (Estonia), Lejins, Torgans & Partners (Latvia) and Norcous & Partners (Lithuania).[5] These firms changed their names to Raidla, Lejins & Norcous in 2008. The Baltic alliance was originally called RoschierRaidla, but changed its name to the RR Alliance in 2010. Since 2012, the firms have cooperated with each other on a preferred firms basis.[6]

In 2005, Roschier established an office in Stockholm.[7] The office was first headed by Axel Calissendorff, former President of the Swedish Bar Association. The current Head of office is Partner Jens Bengtsson. The current Managing partner of Roschier is Rainer Hilli.[8]

Size and impact

The growth of the Stockholm office has been notable. By 2011, the Stockholm office employed some 60 lawyers.[9] In 2015, Roschier employed approximately 215 lawyers and 335 staff members in total, 95 and 130 of those in Sweden. Its annual turnover was approximately 72 million Euros,[10][11] hereby being the biggest law firm in Finland [12] and among the largest in Sweden in 2014.[13] Roschier is also among the 50 largest law firms in Europe.[14][15] Roschier continues to attract leading international talents,[16] and is continuously involved in the region’s most demanding assignments.[17][18]

Roschier has continuously been top-ranked in Finland[19] [20] [21] in an independent Law Firm Review market survey conducted by TNS Sifo Prospera, and has also received recognition as one of the top firms in Prospera’s corresponding review in Sweden.[22] [23] [24] According to the biggest buyers of legal services, Roschier has a strong profile in, for example, large projects and specialist competence on both of its home markets. The Review has been conducted in Finland since 2008, and in Sweden since 2004. Roschier is consistently recognized as a leader by international ranking institutions and legal directories[25][26][27] ,[28][29][30][31] and ranked highly for its services within different legal areas.[32][33]
