Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival

The Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival is a fall music festival in Columbia, Missouri. First Launched in 2007, the festival features over 30 artists representing the genres of roots, blues, gospel, country, folk and soul. The line up includes international, national, regional and local artists. American Blues Scene Magazine called it “One of the most prominent festivals in the country!” As well as live music, fans enjoy delicious BBQ from local and national vendors. Included in the festival is a 1/2 marathon and 10K race on Saturday morning. Runners enjoy live music along the scenic course and enjoy BBQ, beer and a medal at the finish line. The festival is a fun, true, and unique celebration of music, food and culture.

History

The festival began in 2007 in celebration of Boone County National Bank's 150th anniversary. Since 2007, over 250,000 people have attended the festival. The festival was located in downtown Columbia from 2007-2012 and moved to Stephens Lake Park for the 2013 festival.

Music

The festival has featured blues, gospel, soul, folk-rock, and rock music. Bands and musicians have included Al Green, Buddy Guy, Fitz and The Tantrums, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Rodriguez, and Booker T.^[1]

2015

The 2015 festival is scheduled to take place September 25th through 27th in Stephens Lake Park.

The lineup includes Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams, Punch Brothers, Robert Earl Keen, The Wood Brothers, Tab Benoit, Lucero, Junior Brown, Mike Farris and Here Come the Mummies

2014

The 2014 festival took place September 26 through 28th in Stephens Lake Park.

2013

The festival featured two significant changes from past fests in 2013. For the first time, the festival will stretch over 3 days, September 20–22. The festival will also move to a new home. Where in previous years it had been located in downtown Columbia, for 2013 the fest was held at Stephens Lake Park.

Wheeler, and Bocomo Ramble.

2012

The 2012 festival was held September 21–22. The artists that performed were Al Green, Del McCoury Band, Eilen Jewell, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Elizabeth Cook, Joe Lovano with Esperanza Spalding, James Weidman, Otis Brown III, & Matt Wilson, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, Believers, Vulvette, The Flood Brothers, Deke Dickerson & The Eco-Fonics, Wanda Jackson, Monophonics, Rodriguez, Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three, Sam Bush, Eilen Jewell, Donnie Walsh & the Downchild Blues Band, John Mayall, Mountain Standard Time, Don't Mind Dying, The Mojo Roots, The Hooten Hallers, The Hipnecks, Todd Day Wait's Pig Pen, Sara Watkins, and Trampled Under Foot.

2011

The 2011 festival was held September 9–10. The artists that performed were Taj Mahal, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Robert Cray, Fitz & the Tantrums, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Sam Bush, The Flatlanders, Ana Popović, Mavis Staples, The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, The Record Collector, Todd Day Wait's Pig Pen, The Bel Airs, Toubab Krewe, Chump Change, Megan Boyer Band, Cabin Sessions, Man in the Ring, Music Maker Revue, Los Lobos, David Wax Museum, Railroad Earth, The Bel Airs, Dale Watson, and William Elliott Whitmore.

2010

The 2010 festival was held October 1–2. The artists that performed were Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band, Del McCoury Band, The Bel Airs, Those Darlins, Jimmy Wayne, Noah Earle, Garotas Suecas, Big Medicine, Mudcat, Music Maker Revue, The Record Collector, Ron Williams, Megan Boyer Band, Chump Change, Driving Wheel, Vince Cook, Cabin Sessions, La Movida, Man In The Ring, Trampled Under Foot, The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, Shemekia Copeland, Honey Island Swamp Band, Taj Weekes and Adowa, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Dan Tyminski, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Melvin Taylor, Tab Benoit, and Anders Osborne^[1]

The 2009 festival was held September 25–26. 2008

The 2008 festival was held October 3–4. The artists that performed were James Hand, The Record Collector, Roy C, Aubrey and Lori Ghent, Del McCoury Band, Ruthie Foster, John D’Agostino, Cedric Burnside & Lightnin Malcolm, The Bel Airs, Chump Change, Gary Clark, Jr., Doyle Bramhall, Tab Benoit, Bettye LaVette, Buddy Guy, Primitive Soul, Harper, Dale Watson, People’s Army, Music Maker Revue, Jerry Douglas Band, Blues in the Schools with TJ Wheeler, Farmer Jason, Curreykorn, Henry Clay and the Full Grown Men, Noah Earle, and Joe Stickley’s Blueprint.

2007

The 2007 festival was held September 7–8. The artists that performed were Jerry Douglas Band, Chris Thomas King, Blind Boys of Alabama, The Gourds, The Rounders, North Mississippi All Stars, Mudcat, Music Maker Revue, James Hand Serious Blues Band, Deke Dickerson, Hilary Scott Band, Taj Mahal, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, Tab Benoit, Toni Price, Kent Burnside, Chump Change, The Bel Airs, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Big Smith, Primitive Soul, and Bait Shop Boys.

BBQ Contest

From 2007-2012, the festival featured a Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned contest. Since 2007, 221 teams participated in the contest, with $15,000 in prize money being awarded in 2010 to top teams. Categories included beef brisket, pork, ribs, chicken and dessert. The contest was discontinued after the 2012 festival in order to allow more vendors to take part in the festival.^[2]

Roots N Blues N BBQ 1/2 Marathon & 10K Run

The festival features a 1/2 Marathon and 10K Run. The 2013 runs are scheduled for September 21, and are the same routes as in 2012, making it more convenient for runners to track a PR.
