Ronald Douglas Sharpe, OAM (born 1950), is an Australian businessman.

Life and career

Sharpe is an Australian company Director and chairman. He is a joint managing director of Industrial Holdings Pty Ltd .[1][2] Mr Sharpe is an award winning Carpenter, a Licensed Commercial Builder, a Licensed Mechanic and has built a career in the field of civil engineering.[3] Throughout his life he has been involved in civil infrastructure and road maintenance through the Sharpe Family Business. His sons, Richard, Hayden and Michael Sharpe are now Joint Managing Directors of Sharpe Bros (Aust.) Pty Ltd.[4] Sharpe Bros, a leading Australian roads company, was named 2008 New South Wales Family Business of the Year by the peak body of families in business, Family Business Australia.[5]

Ron Sharpe was the Founding Chairman of the Road Profiling Association of Australia which evolved to become a part of the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association. As part of the celebration of AAPA's 40th anniversary in 2009, he was recognised for his services to the industry.[6][7]

In November 2009, a book by Margaret Hardy titled Significant Men of the Central Coast was launched [8] and included Ron Sharpe and his sons; Richard, Hayden and Michael Sharpe who were mentioned for their involvement in providing support to community groups through donations, partnerships, volunteering and community sponsorships.[9]

Mr Sharpe has been a dedicated member of the Apex Club and was awarded Life Membership in 1990. He has helped raise funds for a number of causes including the Surf Rescue Helicopter and the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol. He has been involved with the Salvation Army throughout his life, being a member of the Salvation Army Band, building the Salvation Army Hall at Umina with his father and being chairperson for the Peninsula Red Shield Appeal.[10][11]

Ron Sharpe is a Member and Regional Coordinator of the New South Wales State Committee of the Order of Australia Association.[12][13]

Honours

In January 2005, Sharpe was named Citizen of the Year for the City of Gosford[10] and on Australia Day 2006, he was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of his service to the community of the Gosford region through a range of service and social welfare organisations.[14]

Visit to Edogawa

As Gosford City's Citizen of the Year, Ron Sharpe visited Japan in October 2005 and met with Edogawa Mayor, Masami Tada, and city officials.[15]

Mr Sharpe and his wife Carol were taken on a tour of various projects around the city including an under river car park, a man-made stream from one river to another which allowed for parklands and fishing and they then visited a bike parking area which accommodates 2,500 push bikes at a local railway station.[16]

Westpac Banking Centre opening

The new Westpac Banking Centre was officially opened by Ron Sharpe OAM and the Sharpe Family who have been customers of Westpac for more than 40 years. The opening was also attended by Tim Harrington, Westpac's general manager for Commercial and Regional Banking along with Mr Huw McKay, Westpac's International Economist.

Thanking the Sharpe Family, Commercial Manager, Gerard O'Hearn said "As a token of our appreciation for the time and effort you put in to making the opening a superb experience for our guests, Westpac has made a donation to the Salvation Army. On behalf of Westpac I would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Sharpe Group of Companies for taking the time to officially open the Erina Westpac Business Banking Centre."[17][18]
