Román Alberto González Luna (June 17, 1987) is an undefeated Nicaraguan professional boxer who is the current WBC and The Ring Flyweight champion, as well as a former WBA Light Flyweight champion and a former WBA Minimumweight champion.

Career

Dubbed "El Chocolatito" he turned pro in the Minimumweight/Light Flyweight divisions in 2005. For two years he beat weak opposition all by knockout by pressuring them and hurting them with his vaunted left hook. González is managed by Carlos Blandon Vidaurre of Blandon y Asociados, www.blandonyasociados.com and is promoted by Japan's Teiken Promotions.[1]

He challenged the WBA world minimumweight champion Yutaka Niida in Yokohama, Japan and scored a technical knockout to win the title in 58 seconds of the fourth round on September 15, 2008.

After winning the WBA title, González made his debut as flyweight on December 13, 2008 where he stopped Miguel Tellez in the 3rd of a 10-round bout. He went back to minimumweight on February 28, 2009 to defend his world crown against Francisco Rosas which he won by majority decision.

González won his second title defense on July 14, 2009 by unanimous decision over Katsunari Takayama. After vacating his minimumweight title, he won the vacant WBA Interim Light Flyweight Title against Francisco Rojas in Tokyo on October 24, 2010, and was promoted to full champion in February 2011.[2] Winning over two more Mexican boxers, Manuel Vargas[3] and Omar Salado,[4] respectively in March and July, both in Mexico, he retained the title.

In his third defense at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 1, 2011, González knocked out Omar Soto with his right straight and left uppercut at 36 seconds of the second round.[5]

On March 17, 2012 Roman faced Manuel Jimenez at Sinaloa, Mexico. He won the 10 round fight via a first round knock out.

On April 28, 2012 Roman defended his WBA World light flyweight title against Ramon Garcia Hirales at Pomona, CAL. The fight ended as the count was waived by referee Raul Caiz Jr, after Garcia was knocked down twice in the 4th round.

On May 25, Gonzalez stopped Ronald Barrera in five rounds. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds in Polideportivo España, Managua, Nicaragua. However, Barrera was knocked down in the fifth (2:42). The fight was refereed by Onofre Ramirez.

On September 21, 2013 he defeated Francisco Rodríguez, Jr. by TKO in the 7th round. He then defeated Oscar Blanquet, Juan Kantun and Juan Purisima, taking his professional record to 39-0.[6]

González defeated Akira Yaegashi via ninth-round TKO on September 5, 2014 to win the WBC and The Ring Flyweight titles, becoming a boxing triple champion.[7] González retained the titles against Rocky Fuentes on November 22, 2014 via sixth-round TKO.[8]
