Roland Tullen Kun (born May 6, 1970) is a political figure from the Pacific nation of Nauru.
Political roles
Kun was elected in 2004 to serve as a Member of the Parliament of Nauru and has also served as Minister of Justice.[1] From December 2007 to November 2011 he was Minister for Fisheries and Minister for Education. From June 2012 until February 2013, he held portfolios of Finance & Sustainable Development, as well as Education.[2]
He is also an expert on fisheries, one of Nauru's main industries.
Elections and political alignment
Kun is one of the founding members of reform group Naoero Amo. He was a member of the Scotty government from 2004 to 2007 and has been a member of the Stephen government since 2007. He has been elected to the seat of Buada in 2004, 2007, 2008 and in the April and June 2010 elections. Kun was appointed by President Sprent Dabwido as finance minister, but resigned and defected to opposition after disagree with President Dabwido over his declaration of emergency. Kun stood for President in 2013 against government nominee Baron Waqa. He was defeated 13 to 5 by Waqa and now sits in opposition.
Family background
Roland Kun's father, Ruben Kun, served as President of Nauru and was a member of Parliament for 26 years.
His cousin Russell Kun has also been elected to the Parliament of Nauru.
