Roland Eng

Roland Eng (born 1957)[1] is a Cambodian politician and ambassador. He has served as Cambodian ambassador to Thailand and the United States of America.

Roland Eng was the son of Eng Meas, a police official of Sino Khmer descent and Sarah Hay, a Cham Muslim.[2] His older sister Eng Marie was the former wife of Norodom Ranariddh. Roland was sent to France to pursue his education in 1968. Three years later in 1971, Roland's father disappeared and his mother when the Khmer Rouge invaded Cambodia. Roland spent his teenage years under the care of Marie and another relative.[3] In 1979, Eng joined King Norodom Sihanouk as Private Secretary and the following year he graduated with a Degree in Public Administration from Université Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille III.[1]

Eng participated actively in the Paris Peace Agreement which established UNTAC, the United Nation Operation in Cambodia, in 1992 and was appointed ambassador to the United Nations for the Supreme National Council of Cambodia. Eng was elected Member of Parliament for Kampot province, and soon after became the First Minister of Tourism. From 1994 to 1999, Eng was appointed ambassador; in this period Cambodia re-established diplomatic relations with Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. From 2000 to 2005 Eng was ambassador to the USA. As of 2013 he was Advisor to the Cambodian Government and Ambassador-at-Large.
