Robert Edward "Bob" Mulcahy III (born 1932) was the director of athletics at Rutgers University.

Biography

Mulcahy attended Millburn High School in Millburn, New Jersey, and[1] graduated from Villanova University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) in History.[2] Since arriving in 1998, Mulcahy is noted for having raised the Athletic Department's endowment, in obtaining funding from the New Jersey legislature for a massive renovation of Rutgers athletic facilities, and in getting increased television coverage for the Rutgers' Scarlet Knights football, long regarded as one of the worst programs in NCAA Division I-A competition.[2] In 2008, however, "The Rutgers Mess" hit the press, and accusations leveled at the university and the athletic department included corruption charges and wasteful spending: a report concluded that Mulcahy "employed a sports marketing firm that once hired Mr. Mulcahy’s son. It also criticizes a secret side deal engineered by Mr. Mulcahy in which the marketing firm paid the football coach an extra $250,000".[3] He was fired in December 2008,[4] though he insisted he did nothing wrong.[5]

Mulcahy came to Rutgers on April 15, 1998, after a 19-year tenure as President and CEO of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.[2]

Prior to his position with NJSEA, Mulcahy was involved in government at the municipal and state level. At age 23, he ran successfully for Mendham Councilman about a year after moving to the township. In 1970, he became Mayor. He was appointed in 1976 to the state's first Corrections Commissioner.

Mulcahy was a longtime resident of Mendham Borough.[6]
