Robert Ronald Atwell (born 3 August 1954)[4] is the current Anglican Bishop of Exeter, since the confirmation of his election on 30 April 2014.[1]
Atwell was born in 1954 in Ilford, Essex,[3] and educated at Wanstead High School, St John's College, Durham and Westcott House, Cambridge.[5] He was ordained as a priest of the Church of England in 1979.[6] His career began with a curacy at John Keble Church, Mill Hill,[7] after which he was chaplain of Trinity College, Cambridge from 1981 to 1987. He then spent ten years as a Benedictine monk at Burford Priory[8] in Oxfordshire, and finally (before his elevation to the Episcopate) was Vicar of St Mary’s, Primrose Hill.[9]
Atwell was consecrated at York Minster on 24 June 2008 and welcomed into the Diocese of Chester on 27 June 2008 at Chester Cathedral.[2][10]
On 21 January 2014 it was announced that Atwell would be translated to be the Bishop of Exeter.[11]
