The Road Safety Markings Association is the trade association for companies involved with road safety markings in the UK. It represents 90% of the road markings industry by volume in the UK. Many road markings are made from thermoplastics.

History

RSMA was founded in 1976, as the Road Marking Manufacturers and Contractors Association (RMMCA)changing its name to Road Safety Markings Association in 1992. It was incorporated as a company on 27 March 2002. Originally based at Birchfield House on Ifield Road in Charlwood, Surrey it had offices in Bury, Lancashire from 1998 to 2006, prior to setting up offices and national training centre in Gainsborough.

Road markings in the UK

In May 2011 a section of the A4128 in Buckinghamshire was made safer using solar-powered road studs.

In a November 2010 survey it found that the road that had the worst road markings was a five-mile section of thee A6135 north of Sheffield.[1]

Function

As a trade association RSMA exists to promote the legitimate business interests of the UK road marking sector and as part of its role it provides a range of specialist services to member organisations in addition to extensive research and marketing activities designed to identify the safety and economic benefits from the use of road markings. It publishes a range of specialist trade publications including 'Top Marks', 'Top Marks Europe' and member publication (and e-publication) 'On the Line'. Top Marks is circulated to over 8000 industry specialists.[2]

It offers industry training to companies and local authorities via its NHA subsidiary, established in 2007. As part of this, it runs the Road Marking Apprenticeship Scheme.

Structure

It is based in the east of Gainsborough, off the A631, in north-west Lincolnshire on the same site as the Highways Industries Confederation.
